A few weeks ago, I purchased a new wooden mate by mail order. It’s made of Algarrobo (carob wood). At first, I was disappointed that it was so rough when it arrived; it seemed unfinished. But then I spent an afternoon smoothing and sanding it, and came to admire its most irremediable imperfections. These now seem beautiful to me, like birthmarks or freckles. Algarrobo has such a striking appearance, even this dry, untreated wood. I plan to cure it soon with food-grade mineral oil, followed by the customary yerba soak. The oil adds even more depth to the wood grain.
