In defence of our supermarkets

NZ Supermarkets: Why Consumers Should Be Thankful ⸻ Purpose New Zealand’s supermarket sector is dominated by two major companies: • Foodstuffs • Woolworths New Zealand By contrast, the United Kingdom has \~9–10 major supermarket companies, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, Co-op, and Iceland. Public debate often criticizes NZ’s duopoly. This brief examines whether consumers are actually disadvantaged. The numbers tell a different story. ⸻ Real-World Impact (NZ) • 1 supermarket serves \~17,100 people • 1 distribution centre serves \~353,000 people • Staple prices consistent from Christchurch to Hokitika and Westport • Cov...

A healthier DIY alternative from-scratch to instant ramen.

3h ago

A lot people eat instant ramen because it can be cheap (although many actually are not that cheap) and easy to make (especially if its in a "cup" form - just add hot water). But there are a lot of downsides. And a lot of people do some work to supplement it with proteins or veggies (which is good, but there is a use of time & energy). My suggestion is to use a little more time & energy to make a healthier, tastier, and probably cheaper ramen from scratch. I was inspired to write this by the post by the high school living alone who is eating a ton of instant ramen. My qualifications. I'm an Asian-American. I was a latch-key kid who grew up immigrant-po...

There are increasing discussions online about expired packaged products allegedly being relabeled with new expiry dates and resold in the market. If this actually happens, it could be a serious issue for consumers, especially for common items like chips, biscuits, and other packaged snacks that people buy quickly without checking closely. Most of us grab snacks from local shops, supermarkets, or online stores and rarely inspect the packaging carefully. But situations like this raise an important question about how aware consumers are about expiry dates, packaging seals, and product freshness. Do you personally check expiry dates every time you buy packaged snacks, or do you mostly rely on ...

Supermarket stereotypes! Lets compare our expectations

Let's try to map out the "vibe" of US grocery stores based on who you expect to meet there. Describe a "typical shopper" for each of these (and add your state for clarity) Walmart Target Whole Foods Trader Joe's Costco Aldi Publix HEB Kroger 7-Eleven What is your 2-5-word summary for people who shop at these?

How screwed am I?

5h ago

I work at a store in Jacksonville, I am 17. Last night, I was scheduled to work 4:30-7:30, however I misread the schedule and thought I was supposed to work until 8:30. I continued working until 7:50 until FEC sent me home, neither our CSM or ACSM were there. I have been working at this publix for almost two years and have ALWAYS been punctual and I have great relationships with nearly all my co workers (except for my CSM). This was my first ever minor violation and I’m really scared. Am I screwed? EDIT: Meant 4:30 not 4:40

Right to disconnect?

I work at a major supermarket and am an assistant department manager, although am treated as if i am a department manager. I am not on a salary, and only earning 28/hour. The department in my store is not big enough to have a salaried dept manager. I am being asked consistently to work on my weekends. I am constantly being texted to find cover for peoples shifts - this is not easy and can take a long time. It is my managers, who are in store and able to cover the shifts themselves, that are asking this of me. Is this ok? Am I overreacting. I feel that if I was on a salary, fair enough. But for 28/hour I shouldn’t have to work on my weekends, right?

Broasted chicken is a Wisconsin invention

6h ago

Credit L. A. M. Phelan for the Broasted Chicken phenomenon ... and for developing the equipment which makes Broasted Chicken possible. Not to mention developing the business model as allows independent restaurants and drive-ins to offer Broasted Chicken **WITHOUT** having to pay costly franchise fees to the likes of KFC, Brown's, Church's, Zaxby's, Popeye's, whatever. Thereby making such as Wisconsin a staple as Friday evening fish fry, Saturday evening prime rib, Sunday buffets or Brandy Old Fashioneds. Eventually evolving into two other concepts, Broaster Express (aimed at convenience stores and smaller supermarkets) and Rock County Smokehouse, essentially built on th...

Day 153 Review - Chili Lot-o-Burger Combo at Frostop

7h ago

|Chain Name|Frostop Drive-In| |:-|:-| || |Food category|Primary: Burgers (fast food) Secondary: Chicken (boneless)| |\# of US Locations|13| |\# of US States|7| |Primarily located in|Louisiana| |Restaurant Rank in US $ Sales 2024|not ranked| |Rank of price (high to low)|135th out of 183 meals| And now, for something completely different. If you're like me, if someone said to you, "Frostop", then your response would probably be, "Never heard of it." But at one time, Frostop Root Beer was up there competing with the likes of A&W, Barq's, and Mug Root Beer brands. But nowadays, it doesn't even crack the Top 20. Frostop was created exactly 100 years...

Crush hasn't accepted my follow request yet, why?

So I (f, 25) have been having very flirty interactions with a guy (idk his age) who works at my local grocery store. I'll list a few examples below: - making flirty comments like: "For you I'll make an exception (with a wink)" - saying hi to me multiple times during my visit to the store (each time we run into each other). - looks at me from a far, smiles and when he comes closer, he greets me super friendly. - shared which days he works. - asked about a bandaid on my hand (what had happened to it) while there was a super long line behind me at the checkout and it was really busy. Its important to mention that because im such a regular there, ive spoken to many of hi...

Spotted today, the most Naples thing yet.

Out mid-day Wednesday, traffic awful everywhere, we go to C, the big membership warehouse store, noontime, parking lot full, gas pumps with lines of max length and creepers waiting around corners, checkouts jammed, waiting fourth in line for checkout ahead of us, us with maybe $500 stuff, a couple, the two of them checking out one bag of dried prunes. But that's not the Most Naples Thing. We get a bite, park our cart, find the last two seats in the table area, and parked next to us is a cart, the contents ONE BOX OF WOMENS' DEPENDS. WHO in their right mind would suffer the traffic, the lot jam, danger of bumps everywhere, to go to C at noontime, for THAT? She likely passed four...

Bottle returns, just a little rant.

10h ago

When I used to work in retail (supermarket) I had to do all sorts of jobs. Some where totally up my alley (working the tills) while others were a nightmare (stocking up shelves). There was a special task though, a bit of a love-****-relationship for me. Working the bottle return. (For people living where such a system doesn't exist, there's an explanation at the bottom)\* Don't get me wrong, just listening to some music while sorting empty bottles into the correct crates is so **** relaxing - I loved doing this from time to time. Refillable bottles have to be empty because they get cleaned and, of course, refilled and cleaning bottles without trash in them is easier and ...

Roches Stores Supermarket

11h ago

Does anyone remember/know when the supermarket part of the Patrick St Roches Stores opened? Trying to do some research on Roches and everything I’ve found so far is vague, with articles saying that supermarkets started being part of all the Roches dept stores in Ireland in the 70/80s but I’m wanting to know about the Patrick St one specifically.

My Dreams 2

Im at a mall and Little Big are there to perform a single song live (i think it was turn it up but i dont remember) and i have a ticket, but i cant make it to the seating, and can only see the show from the side, which royally pisses me off. It also is apparently the midpoint of some local political conference, the show was meant to be a break for them. They finish and i walk away angry having not gotten to enjoy the show. People start making fun of me, and it changes from a mall to a high school. Im walking down a hallway and keep getting mocked, and suddenly my pants disappear and people mock me even more, and then i fully snap. I angrily summon hordes of rats from the ground, and they beg...

Must-Buys in China as a Tourist

**1. "Made in China" Products (overcharged on Amazon)** Now you're in the original country and find all those 'made in China' an original price, much lower than their exporting prices. Life necessities (nail clippers, umbrellas, etc.), small appliances, decorations & artifacts (phone cases, earrings etc.), you can find almost anything there. Reminder: Price doesn't always equal quality here. The risk of online shopping is you commit a blind purchase and have no idea of the real quality before you receive it. You need to ignore the flashy propaganda and check real user reviews. My weirdest win: I bought a $3 vibrator (might be $19.9 on Amazon) accident...
