The Fresh Grocer is Opening in Downtown Brooklyn on Friday, Feb. 13

2d ago

New full service grocery option opening up in Downtown Brooklyn next to City Point! The market will be owned by The Inserra Family, which operate 23 ShopRites in Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties in New Jersey and Rockland County in New York. The Fresh Grocer is a brand from the supermarket cooperative Wakefern Food Corp (which also owns the ShopRite and Fairway marks). All of a sudden that area in DTBK has become a grocery store mecca. Trader Joes, Aldi, Lidl and Target all operate in that area.

I'm Portuguese, my wife is Australian, and we moved here from Australia in December 2022. About three years in now, and I've helped dozens of expats navigate the move. Everyone gets blindsided by the same things, so here's the unfiltered version of moving to Portugal. **The Cost of Living Reality Check** Everyone hears "Portugal is cheap!" and books a one-way ticket. Let me break down what things actually cost in 2026: **Lisbon (monthly for one person):** * Studio apartment (decent area): €900-1,400 * One-bedroom (Arroios, Anjos, Alvalade): €1,100-1,600 * Utilities (electricity, water, internet): €90-140 * Groceries: €300-400 * Eating out (casual): €12-...

I'm a 35-year-old journalist living in Western Europe, and this week it rained nonstop

3d ago

I'm a freelance journalist in a costal city in Western Europe. This week it rained an astounding amount for one of the sunniest cities in Europe, and so I took the metro far more than I normally would. In terms of financial goals, I would like to buy a flat here (which may mean emptying my investment account to borrow less). I've converted all currencies to € for ease except for investments. # Monthly income: Varies because I’m self employed, but averages to about €3,000/month—with about €865 in rental income *(all post-tax)*. The rental income is from a flat in a VHCOL city in the US and that amount is post mortgage and monthly fees.  # Monthly expenses:  Rent: ...

Sick of tourist traps? Here's how I traveled 2 weeks in Slovenia for under $700 (and actually saw local life) 🌍

3d ago

Forget the "must-see" Lake Bled gondola, I spent two weeks in Slovenia for under $700 and saw more than just souvenir shops. Yeah, I know, I almost didn't believe it either. I'm usually the sucker paying $20 for a bland burger in a capital city, so I'm as surprised as anyone that I pulled this off. After too many trips feeling ripped off and herded like sheep, I decided Slovenia was going to be different. I was determined to actually *live* it, not just visit it. This trip, I skipped the glossy brochures and leaned into local markets, quiet villages, and a healthy dose of walking. No fancy tours, just me, a backpack, and a lot of asking locals for directions. --- ...

Something I Appreciate About My Hometown

5d ago

Day 21 of the 28-Day Writing Challenge Daily Prompt: What is something you appreciate about your hometown? One thing that I appreciate about my hometown, which I also find astonishing, is the number of grocery stores we have – almost as many as churches, and in a Southern city, that’s a lot!  We are not a hugely populous area, with only about a million and a half people in our area.  However, because we have a highly educated population with an above-average income level and a strong local economy, we are one of the areas in the US that companies flock to.  Even foreign companies, when they launch in the US, choose to build here early on.  My sister lives in an area with a larger ...

cost of living in london for students

# Cost of Living in London for Students 2026: A Comprehensive Budget Guide London remains the ultimate destination for higher education, housing some of the world’s most prestigious universities. However, the prestige of studying in the UK capital comes with a well-known reputation for a high cost of living. As of 2026, global economic shifts and local inflation have adjusted the financial landscape for students. Understanding these costs is no longer just a recommendation; it is a necessity for a successful academic journey. On average, a student in London should expect to spend between **£1,500 and £2,200 per month**, depending on their lifestyle and location. This guide provides a me...

International student looking for grocery shopping & online store advice (budget-friendly)

7d ago

Moi everyone! I'm an international student and I’m trying to figure out the best way to manage my food budget. 1. **In-person shopping:** Where do you recommend for the cheapest weekly groceries? I’ve heard about Lidl, Prisma, and K-Market, but which one is truly the most student-friendly? 2. **Online Stores:** Are there any preferred online grocery stores or apps? (Either for home delivery or for finding surplus/discounted food like Fiksuruoka). 3. **Tips:** Are there any specific "hacks" (like the red sticker discounts) or loyalty cards that are actually worth getting for a student? Kiitos in advance for the help!

Avis CV de développeur web en alternance

8d ago

Grocery Store Rankings

11d ago

What do you go have for ranking local Baltimore grocery stores? This counts stuff in the county, only listing stores with general foods, so not speciality foods or specific international markets. My list: 1. Wegmans (generally has everything, good produce) 2. Grocery Outlet (sort of what I want Lidl or Aldi to be) 3. Trader Joe’s (maybe too high but it’s easy for me to be there, has some things I can’t get elsewhere) 4. Harris Teeter (generally ok across the board) 5. Lidl 6. Weis 7. Mom’s (can have nice produce but hard to get all groceries there) 8. Giant 9. Streets (Charles Village one is a mess, the one downtown is good and if you live or work downtown it’s the only p...

Lidl, £32.58 Employee discount, 21F, Single Uni Student Living alone

11d ago

I’m a full time uni student and have a 25 hour contract with Lidl, I go to the gym 4-5 times a week and like to cook a lot, and never tend to eat out. I have rice and pasta, a good few press bits, and some other fruit and veg I buy from the market. I usually spend under £20 most weeks but wanted to try some new things such as the protein yogurts (I only tend to buy greek yogurt) and the wraps/bread (big jason’s sourdough fan!!). Found Kinder Maxi’s on specials which I haven’t seen much since I lived back home in Ireland ! What are we thinking of the shop? I’ve been quite bored of food lately, any fun meal or Lidl specific recommendations? Thanks!!

Does anyone know of a store in central Dublin that sells empty teabags?

11d ago

Pretty much as the title says. Want to make my own teabags to bring to work, but after searching high and low I still can't find any. Do they have them in any stores, or do I gotta go online? Any help is much appreciated! EDIT: for those who see this later - I tried 3 big tescos, dunnes, lidl, supervalue, and wall & keoghs, all of which were busts. I finally found them at asia market on drury

How are Varoufakis' "techno-feudal" platforms different in any way from supermarkets and malls?

12d ago

Yanis Varoufakis thinks we entered an era of techno-feudalism because digital platforms are not marketplaces, they are fiefdoms that extract rent from the traditional capitalisit class, replacing markets. So Amazon for example is what he calls a 'digital fiefdom' because 40% of everything that is bought and sold on Amazon is rent extracted by the cloud lords, which the traditional capitalists who sell on Amazon have to pay. Is this actually new? Even before the internet we had the entire retail industry where supermarkets function in the same way that Amazon functions. If we'd follow his logic, we'd have to conclude that Lidl is not a market, it is a fiefdom which extrac...
