seeking gift ideas: low-responsibility, low-cost, thoughtful

6h ago

i like the custom of giving gifts for birthdays; it's nice to celebrate someone once a year, remind them we care about them, make life feel special. unfortunately, if you don't have a good idea in mind, this often leads to buying whatever we find, just to have something to give. influenced by minimalism and anti-consumption \[both ideas and subreddits i've enjoyed\], i've also come to feel that giving material goods means we're also saddling the recipient with a commitment. this is not to say that all gifts are troublesome, it's just another angle to consider when giving an item. even when they really like it, there's often packaging to sort and discard, a...

Are electric scooters allowed inside library, Starbucks, grocery stores?

21h ago

New to SD. I am thinking about buying an electric bike instead of a car. My go to places are Giesel library, downtown library, lestats in north park and grocery stores like Trader Joe’s. Could someone please confirm if electric scooters are allowed in these places or is car really the only option to manage commute?

Purple Ube desserts

23h ago

The green trend, which was fueled by matcha and Doujjonku, has subsided, and now the purple "Ube" is taking its place. Leading domestic coffee chains, as well as bakeries and convenience stores, are flooding the market with related products. Ube is a type of purple yam cultivated in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. It is characterized by a flavor similar to purple sweet potatoes but with a much more vivid purple color. It is said to have captured the tastes of the MZ generation because it can produce vibrant colors without artificial dyes. Furthermore, its image as a "superfood" rich in anthocyanins makes it popular among young people seeking caffeine-free beve...

🚨🌸 CODE RED ORCHID PEOPLE 🌸🚨

1d ago

Trader Joe’s at Westlake (Daly City, CA) is STACKED right now with unusually good orchids. Not just the standard grocery store phals either — there are some genuinely interesting varieties mixed in. Some are even FRAGRANT. 👀 I spotted: ✨ unusual color patterns ✨ compact/mini types ✨ heavily speckled blooms ✨ some with actual scent (YES, scented grocery store orchids) If you’re an orchid goblin like me and have zero self control, this is your warning before they disappear by tomorrow morning. 💀 Honestly one of the better Trader Joe’s orchid runs I’ve seen in a while.

Publix is cooked

1d ago

It was written on the wall back in 2021ish when they rolled out in the masses BUY2 get one free . Was a 90-100% Publix shopper for my groceries . But thankfully over the last 5 years, more Whole Foods , aldis , sprouts, and Trader Joe’s are around . Can literally eat healthier for cheaper shopping these places. (I’m sure the prices topic has been beaten into the ground here). Went into a few stores today that were zoos. Went into the Publix by my house, which was the first time in quite a while that I’ve been to one and it was just like a normal day in there. Back in the day that place would’ve been a madhouse on a Mother’s Day morning.

Whole Foods Pizza Dough

1d ago

I normally make my own dough cold ferment over 2 or 3 days and it works great for my preferred pizza style. I'm always looking for a store bought dough that compares to mine in terms of results and an easy to stretch dough that doesn't fight me. The online frozen doughs are usually good but expensive. Store bought dough seems a mixed bag. Publix sold the worst dough I recall trying but Trader Joe's is just okay and Aldi dough can be decent. I've never bought dough from a local pizza place but I should probably try that some day. My big surprise was trying dough from Whole Foods. It came fresh, not frozen and there was enough to make two 280g dough balls with some left o...

New Caffe Panna coffee flavor + Leopold’s and Bassett’s (Coffee Talk)

1d ago

After 10 weeks, the buzz is starting to wear off. I’m wrapping up my ice cream journey that saw me taste dozens of coffee flavors, reconnecting with some old favorites like Haagen-Dazs and Graeter’s and discovering new standouts from McConnell’s, Snoqualmie and others. We’ve looked at various premiums, regional brands, store brands, some that were close to home for me in the Northwest. Today, I’m ending Coffee Talk on a handful of brands farther from home — those that through the magic of the modern world and dry ice I’m able to ship cross-country to my door. For way too much money, I can enjoy legendary regional brands like Bassett’s and Leopold’s and newer trend-setters ...

Why has chocolate gotten so much more expensive?

1d ago

I keep budgets and spreadsheets with the price of things at various stores, and the price of chocolate has SKYROCKETED. Cocoa powder at most stores is upwards of $6 for the store brand, and even Trader Joe’s (which, for reasons I cannot determine, has been much more resilient to the chocolate price explosion) has gone up almost 20% in the last year alone. A bar of Lindt chocolate at my CVS is 8.29, and it’s not much better at other locations. ****, the \*Walmart\* is selling single Ghirardelli bars for \~$5. I remember not too long ago these were in the $2-3 range, and at this point most popular protein bars are higher calorie per dollar than chocolate, which is crazy to me because prot...

Where do you go for Mother's Day flowers?

2d ago

I usually just go to Safeway to grab a dozen roses. At least one of my siblings and my father always grab some flowers for her to so 1 sometimes 2 dozen is enough considering they'll each grab 1 or 2 as well. I never put too much thought in the flowers. Just make sure they look good. The used to be $12 to $15 for a dozen. Now its $17 to $20. That's fine but I'm just wondering if there are better places. It doesn't have to be only roses. It could be a mix. The one time I asked one of the vendors on the road they were charging $35 for 18 so I passed. But that was just 1 vendor. Does anyone go to a certain vendor? How much do they charge for what? Do you go to another stor...

BUSTAFELLOWS in TEXAS report

Where to Purchase Flowers for Home Arrangements in Canada

2d ago

Hi there! I've been wanting to get into floral arranging for a while (as a hobby). I was wondering if any other Canadians can give me some tips on where to find florals by the stem, or relatively affordable bouquets. Up until now, I've just been purchasing bouquets or flowers from my local Sobeys and rearranging them. Costco is also another option, but for a simple home arrangement, I don't usually need so many! Plus, I'd love to be able to play around with a greater variety of flowers and greenery than what I typically find at my grocery stores and Costco. I always hear how amazing Trader Joe's is, but we sadly don't have this in Canada. If it helps, I'...
