Big Box Store VS Appliance store

1h ago

In my search for new faucets, I found that big box store brands such as Delta, Pfizer, Moen, Kohler and such are not the same quality as the brand I purchased at a Plumbing and Appliance store. My question is what about appliances? I need a new washer and dryer. Is Whirlpool and Maytag cheaper quality appliances at Lowes or Home Depot vs an appliance store? Also, what brand do you recommend and why?

IDEA: DIY quiet air purifier (like Brisk Box)

1h ago

I have an idea for a DIY Corsi Rosenthal box that's similar to the [Brisk Box](https://www.cleanairkits.com/products/brisk-box) from Clean Air Kits. It consists of five 140 mm PC fans mounted on foam board for the top section, another rectangle of foam board for the bottom section, two 16-inch-wide MERV 13 filters, and two 20-inch-wide MERV 13 filters. I haven't built this yet, but I may try it in the future. Has anyone here done anything like this? What do you think of my idea? In my opinion, it's best to rely on filters of common sizes only. Using air filters of a common size instead of an oddball size means that you get more value for the money, because prices are limi...

Unexpectedly easier way to pick new flooring

5h ago

I always assumed choosing new flooring would be a huge headache, so I kept putting it off for months. Every time I went to a showroom I’d leave more confused, mostly because everything looks totally different under store lighting than it does in my house. What helped the most was seeing bigger samples at home under my actual lights. I’ve seen people do it a few ways, like grabbing a handful of take-home boards from Home Depot or Floor and Decor, ordering sample kits online, or working with a local flooring shop that does home visits. I tried an in-home consult through 50Floor and it made the differences way more obvious, like what looked “neutral” in a store suddenly looked yellow o...

Anyone else find flooring showrooms overwhelming?

5h ago

I thought I was being responsible doing the whole “let’s go to a big showroom and knock this out” thing. I lasted like 45 minutes before my brain checked out. Every aisle had different lighting, every “oak” had ten versions, and after a while it all just blended together. Then I get home and the swatches I liked in the store look totally different in my house. Our living room gets warm sun in the morning and then gets kinda dim later, so anything with a little yellow or red undertone suddenly looked way more intense than it did under showroom lights. What helped was just doing it at home. I grabbed a few bigger boards from Home Depot and Floor and Decor and left them out for a day...

Anyone else prefer seeing flooring samples at home?

5h ago

I used to think picking flooring meant doing the showroom crawl, but store lighting is kinda misleading. Something can look perfect under bright lights and then look totally different once it’s in your living room, especially when the sun hits it later in the day. What helped me most was seeing bigger samples at home next to my walls and furniture. I tried the take-home boards from Home Depot and Floor and Decor, ordered a couple sample packs online, and also did an in-home visit with 50Floor just so I could compare a few options in my actual lighting without guessing. Do you all test samples at home first, or do you just pick in the store and move on? Any tricks for spotting undertones ...

Anyone else find in-home flooring consultations a game changer?

5h ago

I used to dread picking new flooring. In stores everything looks fine under bright lights, then you bring a sample home and it suddenly looks too yellow or too gray. I kept doing the tiny-swatch thing and still couldn’t picture what it would look like across a whole room. This time I tried doing the decision part at home and it made it way easier. I’ve seen people do it a bunch of ways, like borrowing bigger boards from a local flooring shop, ordering sample kits online, or grabbing a stack of take-home samples from Home Depot or Floor and Decor and leaving them out for a full day. I also tried an in-home consult with 50Floor and the main benefit was just seeing larger samples in my act...

Lunch Break tiny rowing skiff - prototype build details

9h ago

Here is some info on the Lunch Break prototype build. More about the boat itself here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/boatbuilding/comments/1sfrbg8/new\_design\_lightweight\_plywood\_rowboat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/boatbuilding/comments/1sfrbg8/new_design_lightweight_plywood_rowboat/) And below are some details to go along with the photos. 1 & 2. Always build a model, even if following tried and tested plans! For Lunch Break, designed by an amateur (me), models were essential. The model on the left is an example of a simple cardboard boat model, made to scale (1" = 1'), just under 8" long. It is the second Lunch Break model. The first attempt was more similar to Bolg...

Cabinets

10h ago

Hi all. New here. We are doing a kitchen renovation this summer. Our budget isn’t crazy but we are doing a full gut of our main level (kitchen, taking out a wall, flooring, lighting, trim). With our labor costs at 10k, we are trying to stick between 25-30k for the entire project. We are looking into more budget friendly cabinets. Does anyone have any experience with Klearvue from Menards or Avondale from Home Depot? These are the top two contenders right now without breaking the bank/budget. Edit: labor is a GC, not the store

Where to find Pomegranate Trees?

13h ago

Anyone know a a good place to get a hold of some young pomegranate trees to have in my back yard this summer? I’ve considered looking at stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot but wanted to see if anyone one of other possibly better options? Preferably somewhere not too far (Less than a 2 hour drive). I’m also kinda interested in figs if anyone knows about that

College dorm bike storage

18h ago

I was struggling with space when storing my bike on dorm room floor. I didn't find good dorm room bike storage solutions online so I made my own. Went to Home Depot and got 3 hooks. 1 to hold the pedal and 2 to hold the wheels. Tied them all to the bed frame and voila! She's hanging up securely and out of the way.

Whole Foods floral bag, St. Petersburg FL

19h ago

This was my first Whole Foods floral bag. I bought one this week because I figured they'd be clearing away surplus Easter bouquets, but instead I got this great big Kimberly Queen Fern. It was bone dry and so ragged that I wasn't sure it was going to make it at first, but I gave it water and it's perked up a lot already. I think it will do well with some TLC. I love this! I do feel like I got something that would have been thrown away. I wish stores like Lowe's and Home Depot would do this with their surplus plants. I need to buy a big pot for it, so it could be a revenue generator for stores that sell both.

Big store vs. small carpenter for kitchen reno...

23h ago

My husband and I are looking to renovate our kitchen, new cabinets and updated counters and backsplash. We have a rough quote from Lowes and Home Depot, and are trying to stick to our \~15k budget. We got a quote from a very trusted local small business for about 22k, this gentleman has done fabulous work for my family before. We wanted to be pretty strict with our budget, and our home doesn't warrant a super fancy kitchen. However, I have been reading some negative reviews of Lowes and HD, and it seems like for 7K more we could get something custom and guaranteed to be quality. Are the big box stores "good" or are they "good enough?" I don't want to be throwing...

Need to weld generator onto trailer. Will this work?

23h ago

I have an ice cream trailer in which I sell homemade ice cream. Essentially the only thing being powered is the AC and lights and like phone charger or maybe an electric kettle. Not much that requires power. I currently have a predator 9500 regular generator not the inverter type. It is on wheels and is stored inside the trailer. When we arrive, we must roll it out, get it down and roll it to the side. It is super noisy and ****** heavy. I have a couple problems with this setup. First, I am fully physically disabled and almost entirely unable to do any of that myself or even help someone else do it without great risk of injuring myself. Second, I have a need for better accessibility for ...

Location: Tampa, Florida, USA Hello Reddit! I'd like to note I’ve given this dealership/franchise until Friday at 5PM EST to provide a clean settlement without a gag order in order to settle the sitaution. If they don't, I will provide their name, and will be going to the DMV Bureau of Dealer Services on Monday. Will update you all then. Back in August of 2024, I traded in a vehicle to one of the largest dealership networks (hundreds of locations within the USA). The transaction and dealership experience themselves were ok- nothing notable other than the usual uncomfortable negotiations and less-than-you-wanted trade-in value, but overall it seemed like a normal experienc...
