Was there a store called "Computer Craft" in the bay area in the 80s?

1d ago

I'm working on a project to archive an old PBS show called Computer Chronicles, and am adding all the addresses of all filming locations as metadata. In Episode 315, at 3:10, there is seemingly a store called "Computer Craft". It is very likely that this was filmed somewhere in the Bay Area, as the studio was in San Mateo. Right before they're filming in a RadioShack (which I also am not sure where it is, I assume somewhere around San Mateo). The episode is here: [https://computerchronicles.karpour.net/?ep=315](https://computerchronicles.karpour.net/?ep=315) I can't find anything on a store called Computer Craft existing. Could it be that RadioShacks back th...

Death of the “Un-carrier”

**The truth is right in front of us, and it’s impossible to ignore anymore. Every frontline employee can see exactly where this company is heading, and none of it resembles the future we were promised.** We all feel what’s happening, even if leadership refuses to say it out loud. The systems we use every day weren’t built for us or for the customers standing in front of us—they were built to force everything into the app. The complexity we deal with isn’t a mistake; it’s the result of a strategy that never had frontline employees or real‑world customer needs in mind. We were told it would make our jobs easier. Instead, it made us irrelevant. And while the C‑suite stays insu...

Hoping there’s some appreciation here for Warrenton but I stumbled across this on Facebook and thought it was really interesting! Drawn and colored by Tom Chipley.

Phoenix, AZ area - large (Harbor Freight sized) RadioShack store, early 2000s?

15d ago

Hey all, I have a distinct memory from the early 2000s that I am trying to corroborate and I'm looking for some help. Before my dad passed in 2002, I spent a bit of time with him in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ area, helping him tie off loose ends and prepare for his EOL (he had terminal cancer). At one point, he brought me to what I remember being branded as a "Radioshack.com" store - it was basically a Harbor Freight or closeout department store type location, but everything in the store was RS merchandise. No carpets, slatwalls, A/V displays - just wire baskets and shallow tables full of glorious RS goodness. Can anyone verify this store's existence, past or present?

Goodwill Come-up

Snagged this 90's 4x4 RadioShack Intruder for $7 at the thrift store. Fully functioning and came with OG controller! stickers would be in near mint condition, except the tape they used to secure the controller to it layed over the top flames which is a bummer.

Dug this Mamiya 645 out of storage - advice?

15d ago

So my uncle was a photographer, and I got all his film cameras about a decade+ ago. At the time I brought them to a camera shop to check if they worked and they basically told me no. But now that I know a bit more, I’ve tested them myself and they seem fine? BIG caveat, I haven’t tested the electronics. The 6v battery in the box (thanks for not leaving it in the camera uncle Rick) was a RadioShack battery lol, so I need a new one. This is an original model 645. And according to the webs, the serial number corresponds likely to it being from 1980. What I want to know, is if the electronics are dead, is this camera still worth shooting with an external light metre? If so then I’ll repl...

My MicroCenter Experience ( Visiting Fairfax and Rockville stores)

18d ago

Intro: If there are two things I’ve always loved in life, it’s tech and a good deal. I’m currently an IT Sys Admin at a healthcare facility—a role I worked hard to get into without a degree, relying on my Sec+, A+, and years of hands-on experience. My roots are firmly in retail sales; I did stints at Circuit City, RadioShack (my longest run), and my all-time favorite, CompUSA. I’ve wanted to visit a Micro Center since the late 2000s when I was trying to build a DVD duplicator and their burner prices were unrivaled. After a 15-year wait and a recent big age milestone, I finally made the trip. The Nostalgia Factor: Why I Loved CompUSA I first went to CompUSA in middle school. I wa...

The new RadioShack - have any new stores opened since changing owners again?

Curious if any new dealer stores in the US have opened since the latest ownership change. If so, put them in the comments!

Found this time capsule from 2005-2008 while searching for the Distractible website

43d ago

Among many attempts to find the correct link (I believe the right one is distractible.shop?), I stumbled upon distractible.com. Although it looks like a janky, half-broken retired domain— which it is— it also so happens to be the archaic personal site of an IT manager for a church in Houston. With some unintuitive navigation, I was able to find a stream of miscellaneous blog posts from 2005-2008, and though most of them were faith- or family-related, I found some real gems of the era in the mix.

Where are you all buying electrical components?

45d ago

I am working on a solid state electronics class and i want to put together a kit of electrical components like resistors, capacitors, potentiometers, switches, breadboards, etc. I have a shopping list from my text book and Digikey and Newark and Mouser are proving..... incomplete. Is there a store locally I can walk in and grab these things off the shelf? Used to be Radioshack had a lot of this but they are gone. I appreciate the help!

Some advice for a first dad/son product release?

95d ago

OK, some context, for a long time I was getting very frustrated by how many times per day I was unlocking my iPhone, getting a 2FA code, typing it on my Windows computer and oops… wrong, my little 2-sec fish brain lost the 6-digit code again 🐟 😂 So trying again… multiplied by X times a day and X times per week. My son is 17 and loves to code (started at 6) and try everything, so one day we crafted together a simple Python app on my Windows computer and a pretty complex iPhone shortcut. That was a game changer! I started receiving my 2FA codes directly into my Windows clipboard from my iPhone. At one point, one day (I don’t remember why), my Python code stopped working and I r...
