What is this type of roller handle called?

6 months into working on an allotment and here is 10 things I learnt.

3d ago

It has been 6 months since I have taken over my allotment garden and I wanted to look back and share 10 things I learnt about allotments. This might be helpful to new people or a good laugh for you old timers. 1) Seeds go farther than you think. If you plant 100 seeds thinking maybe half will grow, they all will. Figure out how many you can grow in the space you have and pluck or trim seedlings. You can always plant more.   2) Dirt does not go as far as you think. I bought a 750kg bag of soil, thinking I would have soil for the next year… it covered repotting and a couple of beds and I was out. You will always need more compost, especially your first year when you are building up ...

Downlights - recommendations, tips and positions

4d ago

Sorry for fish eye photos but it's a really small kitchen (2x2.2m). As you can see the kitchen is pretty dingy. I'd like to add 4 downlights in the positions marked with pink post-its and remove the lighting rose in the middle (that's not actually in the middle of the room). There's an uninsulated 20cm void above the 2cm plaster so i plan to cut holes and daisy chain off the orignal rose and wire the lights from below. Upstairs bedroom has just had new carpets laid so i don't want to rip that and the floorboards up. The downlights will have a nice natural light (3000 lumens) during the day and a cold white (4000 lumens) when I'm cooking in the evenings. Ques...

Need a stopper for washing machine inlet pipe

4d ago

So the washing machine **** the bed and is sitting in the back garden feeling sorry for its self. I have the water shut off because I can’t turn back on until I get some sort of stopper for the inlet pipe. Currently the inlet hose is still attached but these hoses don’t have taps to stop the water flow. Will this plastic cap do the job?

Restoring the equilibrium of the universe

7d ago

I feel that some of the posts in here recently have been borderline exciting - I found myself actually interested in that barcode post. In a limp and half-hearted attempt to restore some balance to the universe / this sub, I want it to be known that I purchased my first ever set of Forstner bits from Toolstation for £12.98. For those who don't know, these let you drill "flat bottomed holes" quickly and with minimal effort. Wait! Wasn't that a song by Queen? \[photo shows 7 unusual drill bits with a point in the centre and a wide circular lip on the end\]

Sealant for heavy wood table?

11d ago

https://preview.redd.it/t9ouu0s082rg1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3696ebb638ec5bb8c28ac4b6a918a7340bd8e875 Hi, I have a very heavy and old wood dining table with cracks/natural "holes/hollows" (not sure what you call that round bit you can see in the image) It was given to me a few months ago and I have just realised that over the years, maybe decades, that grime/food debris has accumulated in these cracks and crannies. Is there any way I could apply a sealant or varnish over the table top so that what is already inside remains under that sealant, and no more new debris can be introduced into it? I have a bit of cleanliness OCD so it makes me sl...

Three years building the perfect home office and my landlord just decided he wants the spare room back

12d ago

Renting a three bedroom in Leeds, been here four years, work fully remote as a UX researcher for a fintech company based in Edinburgh. When I moved in I took the smaller spare room as a dedicated office, proper desk, monitor arms, acoustic panels on two walls, the works. It’s been the one part of my life that’s genuinely sorted. My landlord rang last week to say his daughter is moving back from abroad and he needs the room by the end of next month. Technically within his rights, the tenancy agreement doesn’t specify the room’s use. I’m not being asked to leave, just to give up the room, which in practice means I’m being asked to work from my bedroom indefinitely. I’ve been ...

How are you supposed to tighten this coupler?

14d ago

I’m trying to fit one of these on a 15mm pipe. There isn’t enough space for 2 adjustable spanners and it looks like if it was upside down there would be space, but the conical side is what goes towards the pipe. https://www.toolstation.com/made4trade-compression-coupler-male/p91660

Hose pipe to jet wash connection

15d ago

Hi I just bought new hose pipe but it doesn't connect to my jet washer. It's 3/4 inch connection. I bought connections from Screwfix & Toolstation - neither of which works. Any idea if I can get adapter? Thanks

Big but normal hinges for DIY wardrobe

15d ago

I’ve built a wardrobe out of some bits of CLS and 18mm MDF. This is a ‘non traditional’ (some might even say ‘bodged’ or ‘half arsed’) construction method based on materials I had already a the slightly odd gap it was going into. I’ve come to install the doors, and I naively assumed that Toolstation/B&Q/normal shops would have some big but normal flush hinges that would bypass the endgrain of the mdf and screw into the cls. The only big ones I can find are fire door hinges the cost like £12 each and presuming needing 4 it would triple the budget of this project. I got a pack of like 20 small flush hinges from Toolstation. Can I just use like 5/6 of these on each...

Questions about old fuses and plugs and standards and also counterfeit products.

15d ago

TLDR: 1. what counts as a reputable vendor? 2. how are the current standards different for, say, plugs and fuses and from, say 50 years ago to now? I have always use old plugs and fuses. The old plugs often seem better than new ones. I have a tin of fuses where I have just kept them. I never seem to need a fuse these days. I am just making a lamp and need a new plug. I am out of old ones. Which got me thinking about standards etc etc. I am aware that you get counterfeit stuff on places like Amazon and also on the high street like Poundland. I am also aware that they are now attached to products that people buy on the same places. But, how far down the list does it go? I know no...

Kitchen Sink Sealant

16d ago

Recently the sealant around my kitchen sink has begun to wear away. I've done some Google searches and gone to Toolstation but can't find either a recommended sealant or small enough nozzle for this job. Bit of a DIY novice so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Question about circulation pump boiler repair

17d ago

Got a boiler on the fritz. Basically we need a new circulation pump as current one is temperamental. Boiler is a Worcester Greenstar 30i combi. Engineer has said the manufacturer says the new pump costs £350+, which is borne out here. https://www.toolstation.com/worcester-8716117400-pump-assembly/pAD531?msclkid=245ebffc342c17148d26d647d3c37c5a However, i have found this one for much less, appears to be the exact same part: https://www.heatingandcateringparts.com/product/worcester-greenstar-pump-assembly-8716117400/?v=7885444af42e There are also ones on ebay brand new for £170. Am I being ****** or missing something obvious, or can i just get the £170 part?

Outside tap isolation valve

22d ago

Can I replace this push fitting for my outside tap, [with this one](https://www.toolstation.com/jg-speedfit-emergency-shut-off-tap/p27435)? First day out in the garden for a while and outside tap has a trickle leak, and I can see where the seal has deteriorated underneath. Ventured into the cellar to find the isolation valve (forgot to do it before winter, paying for it now) and it’s just turning in place, not shutting water off. The fittings are plastic until it reaches the copper pipe, so wondered if I could just replace with this more useful shut off valve.
