What kind of plug?

1d ago

I’ve been trying to buy a plug to fit a used cast iron tub I bought. Tried 3 different ones from Toolstation and none worked. Any ideas what kind of fitting I need? Thanks for your help! Sorry it’s a big dirty/gross. Been in the garden…

Fixing timber shelving frame to concrete block wall – concrete screws or coach screws + plugs?

3d ago

Hi all, looking for some advice on fixing timber to a garage wall for shelving. My idea for shelving. [https://youtube.com/shorts/hIlsTskw2Ho?si=zdQz8-yyO3DMN2f3](https://youtube.com/shorts/hIlsTskw2Ho?si=zdQz8-yyO3DMN2f3) Part of the wall is 100 mm concrete block, and the other part is red brick. I’m building a timber shelving frame against it. Setup: • Horizontal battens: 3×2 fixed directly to the concrete block wall • One vertical stud: \~100×105 mm fixed to the red brick wall My initial plan was: Battens (to block) • 10×80 coach screws • 10×50 plugs • Penny washers • Counterbore in timber Stud (to brick) • 10×150 coach screws • 10×80 plugs...

How would you patch/fix these rotting fascia boards?

5d ago

Hi all, Bit of a DIY luddite so here goes. Flat roof was leaking, not badly but with that torrential rain there was some drips coming in, once it was dry I prepped the area nipped out and applied two coats of this [https://www.toolstation.com/sika-evercryl-roof-repair/p15341](https://www.toolstation.com/sika-evercryl-roof-repair/p15341) . When up on the ladder though I doing the outside trim sections I noticed what i've posted above. How would one approach this as cheaply as possible? Apply some of that Evercryl and then masonary paint on top? Or a pre-made cement and skim that? Silicone of sorts? Reluctant to get a builder in just now as pretty skint. But also because its a 70 yea...

Is there a magic formula for shower hose sizes?

5d ago

Sorry about the "current" blurry photo but I'm getting the hump with this and can't be bothered to take another. The second photo is the replacement hose. We've bought a replacement hose for the shower - we like the smooth ones as they're easier to clean, but it doesn't fit the current holder (yes, the holder is the same size and angle on both ends) so just falls out. I thought these things were meant to be universal - we've bought replacement hoses, heads, holders in the past and they've all fit each other. I try to buy from the likes of Screwfix, Toolstation and B&Q so as not to be stung with odd sizes from Chinamazon but this is win...

Resealing a boiler flue in a 4th floor flat

7d ago

My daughter lives in a 4th floor flat and her gas boiler was "condemned" last week as the gas engineer said that the flue needed resealed and it's not something that he would do - so she's in a bit of a panic. Can this be dealt with from the inside or is it a scaffolding job to fix? Sorry not much detail but it feels to me that I might be able to use something like expanding foam or fire cement from the inside to seal any gaps around the flue.....or is there more to it than that??? I've seen this solution - FlueSnug (https://www.toolstation.com/fluesnug/p23885) any experiences of this?

Torbeck diaphragm washer replacement

7d ago

Hi. Tried to replace a perished diaphragm washer as the fill valve was leaking. Mine has a pin in it. Got one from toolstation which had a plastic plug. Pulled it out and threaded the pin through the hole and put it all back together but it leaks even worse. Aren't these universal? The old washer does look to be thicker. Where can I buy the old version? I would replace the whole valve but I'd have to cut an access hatch which I'd like to avoid.

Self levelling compound

7d ago

about to tile my ensuing bathroom and realised the floor is very wonky. I was originally planning to do backer boards over timber but now decoded to use self levelling compound and will pour it 10mm high to make up for the height lost from backer boards so it's level with my bedroom floor. I don't seem to be able to find the tools everyone is using on videos anywhere. Can anyone provide links to wickes, toolstation, b&q etc. for the pin trowels/sqeeges things and whatever else I might need? never used the compound before so completely green as to what tools will be enough I'm in UK

Is it possible to cut/ remove concrete fences post with hand tools?

8d ago

I did a bit research and found that there was something called concrete hand saw. https://www.toolstation.com/stanley-concrete-saw/p49103 But there are some steel bars inside the concrete posts. Is it possible to cut it? Or should I just dig it out?

3rd shop I tried made my day without trying

10d ago

After work yesterday, I went to ToolStation to try and find a connector for some large-ish copper wire. Just wanted a single connector to join two bits of wire up, nothing fancy. I took the loose end section of the wire in with me in the hopes they could check the sizing for me and make sure I got the right thing. They gave me 2 different options which they thought would fit, but were packaged, and wouldn't let me check them before buying, so I bought one and it ended up being a 3 pole (3 different wires, like your household plug for example) one which was no good to me with my single large copper wire. I went back in and they couldn't refund me but I bought their other suggestion ...

Help identifying this 15mm drain ****

I drained my system to move a radiator and this drain **** was passing after refilling the system. I was planning on buying a similar one from Screwfix/Toolstation to migrate over the washer and pin etc but I can find anything similar? Can anyone help please?

Float valve replacement help

11d ago

Hi. My float valve mechanism is leaking. So thinking of replacing the whole arm & ball float. I've found this on Toolstation: https://www.toolstation.com/delchem-adjustable-arm-fill-valve/p68217 However the part I've highlighted in the box doesn't seem to be the same. Do I need to buy something else alongside this or would this fit into my existing incoming flow pipe outlet?

Connecting stacked washing machine and dryer hoses to same drain BUT in constrained space

11d ago

Hi, I know this has been asked before many times... and yes, I've looked at the [McAlpine Standpipe Twin Connector](https://www.toolstation.com/mcalpine-v33wm-standpipe-twin-connector/p46717), but the vertical drain pipe is in a corner (see photo), so I don't think I could fit a pipe in the direction of the back wall with the twin connector. I'm also considering: * A [double drain universal hose outlet connector](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Connector-Washing-Machine-Dishwasher/dp/B0F6VHGHGN): that looks for washing machine and dishwasher though, not the small pipe of a dryer; does that matter? * A [tee piece connector](https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-appliance-...

Travis Perkins - DIY "Trade Account"

12d ago

I am not in the trade, but I do have a huge house renovation to get on with. Almost all DIY so will be buying a lot of materials. I live close to Screwfix and Toolstation which is great. But for big stuff there isn't much in the way of local merchants, and B&Q is an hour round trip and Wickes is almost 2 hours. But there's a Travis Perkins 10 minutes away, but their retail prices are just silly. Often 50% more and double in some cases compared to the big sheds above. I suspect, and have read that their trade prices are much more reasonable, if not very competitive. Would it be morally, legally, technically wrong for me to pay the £20, set up a limited company that do...

So many DIY shops and still having to use Amazon. Is it just me?

13d ago

Today I needed several things, I went to Toolstation, Screwfix, B&Q and Wickes. Honestly I gave up resorted to Amazon ( I don’t have Prime because it’s all free delivery and comes on the same van). I really did try but what a nightmare, oh Wickes and B&Q offered to order to store which would take a week. I’ve never felt so defeated trying use the shops we have. I could have got 1 or 2 things from each shop but that is a laugh and a half.

Bolt not screwing on - ideas

15d ago

Screwfix/Toolstation don’t seem to stock them and I’m on a time pressure as my wife has taken child out and everything from bedroom is stacked up in hallway etc Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Decent quality Flush lever?!

16d ago

Hey, I've been refurbishing the downstairs loo, and part of that was giving the cistern an overhaul. New flush valve, new fill valve and a new handle. Its the older style lever handle that goes thru the front of the cistern, with a square shaft inside. However I've been thru three handles thus far and they are all complete junk. The metal shaft runs thru a plastic bushing which fixes to the front of the cistern, but the shaft has an extremely poor fit in the bushing and the whole thing just sort of flops around. The 40 year old handle i removed has a much closer tolerance despite being ancient. I would have kept it but the finish has gone. I've had one from both Screwfix an...

UK low cost toilet recommendations + questions

18d ago

I have offered to help a friend to replace their en-suite toilet with a new one as part of an update to sell their house. I looking for a cheap white close coupled toilet with seat and there are several available from Toolstation, Screwfix and Wickes all for around £70. However trying to find technical details on these is challenging. Eg. Is the inlet left or right (or both). I’ll assume it is left as the current one is right (Sods Law) but an extra flex hose will sort that. The current one has an outlet of about 20cm so I would like if possible to find a similar one to keep the same outflow angle. So my first question is really which of the above £70 can anyone recommend? Or any ot...
