[HR] Echoes in the Western Tower

1h ago

Echoes in the Western Tower \*\* \*\* \*\* \*\* **Part I: The Keep at Bollington** The flags of Blackthorn Keep didn’t so much wave as they did mourn, tattered strips of fabric twitching in the stagnant evening breeze. As they approached, John felt the sheer weight of the history pressing down on them. To most, it was a ruin; to John, it was a seven-hundred-year-old battery, potentially still holding a charge from every soul that had passed through its gates for ages. "Stay still, John. The light is perfect," Melissa said, her eyes glued to her phone screen. She was framing the gray, jagged silhouette of the tower against the purple bruising of the Lancashire sky. Jo...

TIFU by asking my friend out on a date, and now I've been blocked

1h ago

I (M) started working at a factory about a month after 'Jane' started, just over 4 years ago. For about a year we didn't talk much beyond what work required. I was still in a long-term relationship, so had no interest in anything more. Jane's Mum, 'Anne', also worked at the factory, and I got to know her pretty soon as we often worked the same shift. My relationship ended due to long-term life goals and perspectives for me and my wife changing, it's a shame, but we're still on good terms. Over time Jane and I figured out we had similar interests; I've been a gaming and book geek since I was a kid, and she was just getting into it all now that sh...

Farewell Spirit

1h ago

With Spirit shutting up shop most likely in the next few hours (certainly in it's current form) I just wanted to share a few pictures I took during my time there as a First Officer. One of my hobbies I like to dabble in is film photography and I certainly haven't mastered the art by any means but it does make for imo interesting little keepsakes. I was furloughed last year and had been recalled and planned on going back, but I hadn't yet so personally while I'm disappointed it doesn't materially effect my financial status greatly - but my thoughts go out to anyone negatively affected by it and especially the crews who are going to be back on the job market and h...

First wine you splurged on

1h ago

What’s the first expensive bottle that comes to mind when you think to yourself “now I totally understand why great wines costs so much”? Some background context: I’m a regular wine drinker but not particularly knowledgeable. I usually spend under $25 at Trader Joe’s or Costco and gravitate toward full-bodied reds. I have a promotion coming up and want to spend around $500. I know wine is subjective and everyone has their own taste but I’m looking for recommendations in the SoCal area (open to visiting wineries in Santa Barbara or Temecula for something I can’t find in a store). What’s a bottle in this range that genuinely changed your perspective on what fine wine can be?

New acquisition

These were bought from my local train store, the original owner moved into a nursing home for extra care and help so he donated all his stuff. The shop donates every dollar spent on one of his items back to him for medical expenses.

Is this the new normal at dealerships? Haven’t bought from one since 2001

1h ago

Hey all, I had a dealership experience this week that honestly caught me off guard, and I’m trying to figure out if this is just how things are now or if I walked into a particularly chaotic store. For context, I haven’t bought from a dealer since 2001. Everything since then has been private party, so this was my first time back in a showroom in a long time. I went in to look at a 2024 car I found online listed at $21,599. The day before, I checked out one at another dealership- similar, about 10k more miles but a few extra options. That one had been listed at $19,999 plus fees, and I had already negotiated it down pretty easily to $17,500 out the door with no pressure at all. Super st...

Before I begin I’d like to add a content warning for grief, addiction, narcissistic abuse, and child abuse. My mom is bedridden, addicted to opioids and benzos, has munchausens, possibly dealing with dementia, and is deeply manipulative. She can flip from sweet and helpless to outright abusive in seconds. It’s not just dysfunction, it’s calculated. She knows exactly how to present herself to avoid consequences. She makes Tony Soprano’s mom look like an angel, iykyk. Before my Dad died, he set her up with 24/7 professional medical care. The day after he passed, she fired all of them because they monitored her medications. Now she pays random people under the table to take care of he...

Day drinking???

1h ago

I work 3rd shift, 10pm until 630am... had to stay awake today for a Dr appointment, grocery shopping, the liquor store, and then a Fed Ex delivery that required a signature... finally fell asleep in my recliner for who knows how long, it has a built in time warp function... now it's 1145 at night and my day off... been awake for about half an hour but still sleepy and wouldn't mind going back to sleep for a few more hours. Just poured myself a Vodka and orange juice. Is drinking at Midnight considered day drinking if I work nights??? 😃 Who else is with me!?

Public Etiquette is Dead

1h ago

What happened to being a person in a society? Why does everyone think the world is their living room? I’m at a coffee shop and the person next to me is watching TikToks at full volume without headphones. I’m at the grocery store and someone leaves their cart right in the middle of the aisle to go look at cereal three sections away. People talk on speakerphone in public restrooms. They treat service workers like NPCs in a video game instead of actual humans. It’s like the concept of situational awareness just evaporated. Put your headphones on, move your cart, and acknowledge that other people exist around you! It’s not that hard!
