The Permanent Squeeze: Why Grocery Automation Is No Longer Optional in 2026

1h ago

The grocery industry is facing a crisis that won't resolve itself. According to insights from the National Retail Federation (NRF) 2026, what retailers once hoped was a temporary challenge has become a permanent operational reality. Margins are eroding, labor is scarce, and the economics of traditional grocery operations are fundamentally broken. The data is disturbing: grocery retailers are projected to see margins compress by 20-30%, while simultaneously operating with 15% fewer staff than just a few years ago. This isn't a momentary disruption, it's the new normal. For grocery retailers, the question is no longer whether to automate, but how quickly they can implement solu...

Anyone remember Today's Special?

1h ago

Came across this image recently and it brought back memories. The show was set in a department store where the mannequins would come to life after closing time. Jeff, Jodie and Muffy the mouse were such fun characters. Simple idea but a really charming kids’ show. Did anyone else watch this growing up?

Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad Trilogy - my thoughts

1h ago

**An imaginative and amusing romp for middle school readers ... and adults!** Terry Pratchett is most well known for his Discworld series, which is written for adults. But some of his books that I’ve enjoyed the most are the ones in which he targets a younger set of readers. The Bromeliad Trilogy is a fine example. It is less commonly referred to as The Nome Trilogy, because it tells the story of little people called “nomes”, who at one point are compared with pixies without wings. The first book of the trilogy, Truckers, tells the story of a small community of nomes who take the bold step of travelling across a motorway, and enter the Arnold Bros department store. To their sur...

I been on a major JoJo's phase again

2h ago

My name is Yoshikage Kira. I’m 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don’t smoke, but I occasionally drink. I’m in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I’m trying to explain that I’m a person who wis...

8/10 on a survey?! That's terrible!

2h ago

Recently, I got an 8/10 on a survey. Apparently the only reason I got an 8 instead of a 9 or 10 was because the customer had to wait a few seconds for me to walk over to the counter (since we all know in this day and age we have more things to do than stand at a register waiting for a customer) and that wasn't good enough for my manager. I told my manager that I frequently check the counter when I'm doing other tasks so they likely didn't wait more than a few seconds (there are giant columns blocking the view of the counter so I wont always know someone is there immediately) and her response was "well you weren't looking that time" and proceeded to lecture me ab...

Explainer: Why Chennai’s proposed "Citizen 360°" Needs to be Rolled Back

3h ago

# Tl;dr Chennai’s proposed Citizen 360-degree platform aims to create digital profiles by aggregating grievance records, service interactions, and administrative data into a single system integrated with the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre. While the tender is framed as a tool for improving governance and service delivery, it risks enabling citizen profiling by linking interactions such as complaints, service queries, and scheme applications. Without clear legal safeguards, the platform could undermine core accountability mechanisms within the government functions. Therefore, the platform requires reconsideration and stronger guardrails before deployment. # Introduction T...

Team Lead beefing over 9 minute grace period

5h ago

New to Walmart. Over a month of being there. And I plan to leave soon once my lease is up, thank the heavens lol. My team lead has an interesting reputation around; being late chronically, disappearing, and calling in all the time somehow and still having a job. Yet he was trying to get on my case for clocking in 7:05 am to 4:05pm. My shift is 7 to 4. That’s within the 9 minute grace period and I told him such. And I said I was getting just my 8 hours, no overtime. He made it sound like it was only for emergencies, the 9 minute window, and I have to clock out at 4 on the dot no matter what. I asked many people at my store, as well as searched it online. I presume it’s just bullshit? But...

Goin out bein a creep

5h ago

Goin’ Out, Bein A Creep Tired I was of my black apartment. Pitch floors, raven ceilings, blue mirror from the reflection off the floor into the bathroom. Light switch on the wall invisible with the hour and no reason to reach for it. Too late for the lights on, too odd. Two in the morning all I hear is the **** air conditioner unit. Blind men hear better, taste better, feel better. Can’t see very well though, my god-given right to this world, the visible world, taken away by something every night and why should I let it? This sun, this setting and this rising. Why do I conform to the dark and the heat and the cold its cycles bring? And what about the moon. I digress. If the sun won...

Signing refresh

6h ago

I don't know what the communication was because I am not high enough, but the store was stripped of nearly everything, flags, headers, etc. Project is to be completed by March 14th and going forward, at least I was told, these additional signs won't be used. Why have POGs in multiple departments still called for these carry forward signs, or even, sending new flag signing? Do we just toss it then, as leadership tossed most hardware to go with it? Genuinely confused. I tried to ask my lead, showed them the carry forward header, on the new POG and they yanked it from me to toss, so I don't know. Just skip the ISM part of the POG assist program?

How to Resign

6h ago

I’ve worked at the store in a specific department for 5 1/2 years. I held on hoping for a 5 year luncheon but it never came up. I’m tired and ready for a change so my question is how do you resign in good standing?

Girls, where do you buy your clothes? What style and colors do you wear?

6h ago

I’m curious where most girls in this age range buy their clothes. I was mainly raised getting clothes from places like Target and Kohls (nothing against them), but I also have older parents who have never understood what people my age wear. Until my mom finally gave up and let me choose what I wanted to get, she always picked the most colorful things she could find, which just weren’t for me. Everyone else in school would wear mostly solids, even in elementary school, and I’d still be wearing shirts with stuff by Cat & Jack from Target because my mom said I couldn’t just wear plain and boring colors that “nobody” wears. So now I’m in college and I’ve worn kind of ath...

Any services that let you try watches before buying? (free shipping)

6h ago

I went to Macy’s today and tried on probably 10 different watches, and I only liked one out of the bunch. I’ve been looking at watches in the 38mm range and I’m finding it really hard to commit to anything online without seeing how it actually wears on my wrist first. I don’t have a ton of great watch shops near me beyond department stores, and their selection only goes so far. Are there any websites or services that let you try watches at home before you buy? Ideally with free shipping both ways so I’m not spending money just to figure out something doesn’t work for me. Open to hearing about any experiences — dedicated try-on service, a retailer with a really generous retu...

So can they take away our time off?

7h ago

Recently at my store they’ve been super weird about time off. I work at a Walmart in a college town. So my friends and I all work in the fashion department. The problem has come up with college event that some are mandatory, where a few of us need time off on the same day. So one of my friends needs a couple days off to go home for a family thing and another one of them needed a couple of the same days off for a school event. We are just worried that they can take away approved time off. Is this the case?

Do you get lost easily?

8h ago

I’ve recently been diagnosed with ASD at 41 years old and ADHD 6 months prior. I’ve been trying to make sense of my life and started to wonder about a lifelong problem I’ve always had and whether it’s related to autism… getting lost and disoriented easily, even in places I’ve lived for a decade or longer. Example 1: a pathway that I usually use to collect my son from school was closed because a nearby resident was having gas works at their home. I had no idea how to find the school via another route and after a lot of internal panic, decided my best option was to follow someone else who had also intended on using the part but couldn’t, and hope they were picking up a child fr...
