Excerpt from The Alternative in Eastern Europe by Rudolf Bahro (2 The Origin of the Non-Capitalist Road III)

2h ago

**2 The Origin of the Non-Capitalist Road** …. What are the origins of this indigenous class society without private property? **When the retreat of the last Ice Age brought the Afro-Asian desert band into being, this gradual deterioration of living conditions found the scattered human groups in the areas affected at the most different stages of development of the primitive community. Around the ‘fertile crescent’ of the Middle East, in particular, many populations had been involved in the Neolithic agricultural revolution and had made the transition to agriculture. The growing productivity of their labour led to the increasing relative concentration of their population. The decimat...

The Red Woman: Part 3

2h ago

[The Red Woman: Part 2 : r/TalesFromTheCreeps](https://www.reddit.com/r/TalesFromTheCreeps/comments/1pj2lad/the_red_woman_part_2/) After a banana, morning coffee, and a kiss to my wife I was out the door. She tried asking more about baby stuff but I just couldn’t talk about it, there was a job to be done and in all honesty, I have been avoiding the subject. How could the tooth belong to someone from that long ago? Was the tooth a namesake of John's family? I am unfamiliar with Native American customs when it comes to holding on to something like teeth. Maybe it was a way to honor their ancestors. Too many questions and not enough answers. When I arrived, Carson was waiting outside th...

US Dept of Labor unable to reach employer?

2h ago

I worked at Jack in the Box in Illinois once they returned, but due to various issues, I left. I also found they witheld my pay for orientation and inserted at least 4, 30-minute unpaid breaks into my hours that I never took. I was never able to access my paystub and both the store GM and shift leads ignored my pleas for help. The district manager hung up on me when I said what happened. Due to that, I then filed a complaint for unpaid wages, but I received a call from the DoL saying that....they are unable to reach the number of the district manager and they are unsure what else to do. They also told me they were confused because Google said the location was in a different city than what I...

Career orientation advice

2h ago

\*\*1. PERSONALIA\*\* \* Age: 28 \* Education: BA in Translation \* Work experience : 4 Hi all, hope you’re doing well. I’m writing here because I currently need advice outside my social circle about my future career path. Hope I’m in the right community to ask this kind of question. The post is quite long, feel free to scroll to the end. ==================== TL;DR: I want to switch career path. I hold a BA in Translation, speak three languages fluently and two at a basic level (FR/EN/RU + NL/PL). I worked for four years as Sales Manager in the automotive industry. I currently run a sidekick (officially) in the same field, but I’ve been highly advised to slow down due to my...

Deep pocket sheets that actually stay put on thick mattresses?

3h ago

Most sheet sets say they fit “up to 16 inches” or “extra deep pocket,” but in practice that seems to mean barely surviving one night before popping off a corner. With thicker mattresses and toppers becoming pretty common now, I’m starting to wonder if the labels just haven’t caught up to reality. I’ve got a mattress with a topper on it and the total height is around 17 to 18 inches. I’m not doing anything wild in my sleep, but I still wake up to the fitted sheet halfway off the bed more often than I’d like to admit. I’ve tried a few random Amazon brands and one department store set, and they all stretch at first then slowly give up. Before I keep throwing money at trial...

[SEIKO MM300] First nice watch?

3h ago

I’m looking at purchasing my first nice watch. For context I’ve owned plenty of Casios and other department store watches. Now, I’ve been working my adult job for a while and have wanted to reward myself. I had my eyes on the SPB255 for a while, but this SLA059 (pictured here) popped up. I like both, the latter is obviously more expensive, but priced at what I would think is a good deal, at $1800 (complete with box papers, both straps, cuff links even). I guess my question is: would this be a **** first watch? I would intend to wear it on a weekly basis to my office job and to semi formal events. I really like the look of these divers, and I’m curious if the price difference is reall...

Transitioning from public health to SQL data analyst

3h ago

I’m looking for career advice and guidance on upskilling. I’m currently an epidemiologist, but my background includes healthcare and work as a clinical laboratory scientist. I considered switching careers during COVID while working in public health, but instead moved to a different health department. Despite the change, I’m still feeling burned out and frustrated with the management structure and culture typical of government roles, and I’m exploring options outside of public health. In my current role, I focus heavily on data analysis and database creation/management. I primarily use SAS for analysis and Microsoft SQL Server for managing internal and public-facing datasets. I write...

Had a really uncomfortable experience at Costco - Kanata today

3h ago

I was at Costco with my wife and my brother. After shopping, I went to grab food from the food court. Out of nowhere, a lady from the Membership department rushed up to me, started raising her voice, and pointed at my brother in front of like 50–60 people. She asked, loudly, “Is he on your membership?” The tone was super aggressive, like I’d done something illegal. Before I could even process what was happening, she went straight into a loud lecture about upgrading my membership and getting “$50 off” or whatever. I honestly don’t even remember the details because my mind just froze. After that, she walked back to her desk and kept pointing at me like I was being called out fo...

AIO I think my boss may be trying to get me to quit, but I'm unsure what to do or if I'm over reacting

3h ago

Hello, you can call me Ally and am 27. I am looking for advice as I am too overwhelmed to think clearly right now, so any advice would help. For background, I have been a tight spot for a bit. I left my last job because it became a very toxic place very quickly due to some concerning circumstances. As a result, I ended up leaving without a job lined up. I found a job within about 4 weeks, but things didn't go as planned, I was offered an assistant management position, but they hired me on as a full cashier for training purposes. I thought that was odd, but it made sense to me at the time. I signed on, was offered full time benefits, and then things started to go wrong. First, I was no...

Did you know that California does not consider Costco to be a warehouse?

4h ago

This happened at our city council meeting last week. They were discussing development of land. During the public comment section, someone from the audience suggested the city recruit Costco to fill the space. The planning department guy was like "that isn't possible because this land is zoned for a warehouse". The person said "isn't Costco a warehouse?" and he was like "no, Costco is a store". So there you have it. California says that Costco is not a warehouse. _______________ PS I'm posting this here because I assume the same principle would apply to Sam's Club, and because the Costco sub won't allow this post since they think it...

More than 60 sick in California after eating eggs; recall initiated Samples from farm tested positive for Salmonella. By...

4h ago

California health officials say 63 people have fallen ill with Salmonella Enteritidis infections tied to eggs. Thirteen of the patients have required hospitalization, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The department is warning people to not eat Vega brand in-shell eggs distributed by Vega Farms Inc.  The company has recalled its eggs, which were distributed to grocery stores, restaurants, co-ops and farmers markets in Northern California. There is concern that consumers and businesses may still have the eggs because the sell-by date is not until Dec. 22. The CDPH and state department of agriculture inspected Vega Farms and collected egg and environmental sa...

[TOMT] Specific version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

4h ago

Hey all! Long time listener first time caller. I’ve been racking my head trying to find a certain version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Unfortunately I have little information to give out, especially the artist. I only heard it a couple times in my life, once in the mid 90’s in a department store I worked at, and again at the Las Vegas airport (wanna say 2010s). I suspect the song is a bit older than 1995 when I first heard it. I’ll state what I know: while it’s lyrically true to source, it has a sort of rhumba/cha-cha-cha melody to it. It also has an all-female group vocalization to it. It sounds kind of like The Pointer Sisters, but note: it is NOT their version from A ...

Job guidance?

5h ago

Looking for some sort of guidance, advice or even personal stories that could possibly guide me in a direction out of decision paralysis. I’m 30 years old, female, 2 kids and husband. Since the age of 18 (I did not work in highschool, though I wish I did), I have engaged in the following embarrassing amount of jobs: \\- car detailer at dealership \\- cashier at department store \\- sales associate retail clothing \\- home support worker for agencies (5 or 6 times, 4 different agencies) \\- personal care attendant at seniors complex (2 times different locations) \\- waitress (3 times, same restaurant) \\- sales associate for retail warehouse \\- receptionist for town recreat...

Double date with partner and his wife went well.

5h ago

First, thank you to everyone who responded to my initial post with insight. It was very much appreciated. You're all very wonderful people! Today we did a brunch date. It was me, my boyfriend, his wife, and her boyfriend. I was nervous, but I was reassured that it was just casual and nothing huge. It was cold as ****, so I didn't dress up fancy. Jeans, a hoodie, and a toque. I was very delighted when my boyfriend's wife arrived in a jacket, athletic pants, and a toque. Very matched energy and gave me that casual vibe lol. Warmed ourselves up with some wine. Had a delicious brunch. Got to know his wife's boyfriend a little bit better. He's a very nice guy. His w...

Hypertensive Crisis and anxiety

5h ago

Sorry for the long post and likely chaotic thoughts scrambled. A little about me I have terrible health anxiety it happens in waves throughout my life but overall pretty bad. I’m in my mid 30s 5’6 currently 188 so definitely overweight but you wouldn’t really be able to tell if you saw me you wouldn’t be like wow he’s obese. I’ve been pretty athletic my whole life. I’ve always struggled with anxiety like I said especially health anxiety i been cleared by just about every specialist more than once.. most recently was October 2024 cardiologist and neurologist. Last October, I was working and felt overwhelmed and stressed.. i felt off which is not uncommon it kinda is a day to d...

Our holiday decorations, plus our elf on the shelf! Before management changed their minds after only 4 days 💔

5h ago

I love the phrasing as if apparel wasn't the only department decorated, lol. It's amazing the amount of things that they only decide to ban once *we* do it. Still not allowed to work in the same vicinity of coworkers either. My coworker was going to buy the elf after Christmas, to bring him back next year. But since this happened I decided to buy him early and just give him to her. "He's not store used, it needs to be available for customers" means nothing when hes already whole *** purchased By the way, any name recommendations are welcome. I wanted to name him Waldo but coworker said she is absolutely not naming him Waldo.
