Pay is horrible, nobody’s applying

2h ago

Our store has been struggling hardcore to keep departments staffed. I work in the deli and for what seems like half a year now we’ve been running on MINIMAL staff, with having only one closer most nights and one opener in the morning. We’ve been asking HR “please when are we getting more people” and they always lie and say “oh we have two or three people lined up” then months would pass and nothing. It got to the point where they re hired two people who had quit without giving notice, one who had multiple NCNS and everyone really disliked because he never worked. It made me realize that it’s not that HR isn’t hiring people, but no one is applying. Everyone in my store complai...

AITAH for causing my roommate to move out?

There is a lot of context leading up to this event so I guess I’ll start at the beginning. For the sake of privacy, names have been altered and ages are accurate to the time this happened. My longest roommate whom I’ll call Ben (21m) and I (21f) have been friends for a very very long time and decided to get our first apartment together when we were 19. He’s like a brother to me and the only person I trusted enough to live with. Everything was great and we got along very well. Eventually, we needed to move out of the apartment due to pest issues that were not disclosed to us when we moved in. We decided to get a house, as Ben has a large dog and decided to have more roommates to cove...

“Cabin crew, please be seated for landing.” We touch down with the plane, and I tighten my grasp of the handles. I **** flying. It’s when things get out of control, but there was no other way to get here. I take my bag from the conveyor belt and leave the airport. Outside, I have difficulty breathing. Too much heat and traffic. In seconds, I’m surrounded by small, dark-faced Nepalese. “Taxi, Taxi?” I look at a guy wearing a baseball cap with the Shell logo on it. He stands motionlessly on the side, and after I raise my hand, he nods to confirm that he is a driver; I prefer unobtrusiveness. Wangchu is his name. He takes my luggage, says something about “big boss,” and put...

The Best Choices in Cloud Often Require the Least Change

2h ago

The tech industry is obsessed with”rip-and-replace”. Every few years, a new paradigm arrives, promising to solve the sins of the past, provided you are willing to tear down everything you’ve built and start over from scratch. We’ve seen it with the move from on-premise data centers to the cloud, the shift from virtual machines to containers, and now the scramble toward artificial intelligence. But for the person actually responsible for the uptime and integrity of a business (the CTO, the Lead Architect, or the DevOps Manager), these transitions aren’t just exciting opportunities; they represent massive risks of leaving the known, even with all its faults, and diving headfirst into...

Dad joke I came up with at work.

🎭 Dad joke I came up with at work. I work at a grocery store produce department. Today there was some misplaced cheese in a cooler. I saw it was sharp provolone. I took it to the deli lady and once she read it I said "be careful, it's sharp."

Will Ethereum's market capitalization surpass Bitcoin's?

Now, everyone's focus is likely on the performance of other cryptocurrencies. Today, let's talk about Ethereum. Many readers have repeatedly asked me if Ethereum's market capitalization could surpass Bitcoin's. Now that Bitcoin has broken its previous high, if Ethereum can also achieve this, the potential for growth would be unimaginable. As of writing, Bitcoin's market capitalization is $424.2 billion, and Ethereum's is $73 bill...

Chronographe Suisse

Unfortunately my grandfather passed away last month at the age of 92 and since I am the only watch guy in the family I inherited his box of watches. Mostly filled with department store watches and a fake Breitling but there was one interesting piece the family traced back to the father of my grandmother. I don't think my grandfather ever wore it so there is a good chance it has been inside this box since the 40s. Chronographe Suisse was a sort of neutral "brand" produced from the 30s to the early 50s. You could say it was some sort of collective of smaller watchmakers which allowed them to produce their own (optionally branded) dials and create these interesting affordable sw...
