On “Nature or Nurture”

\[ESL, LLM proofreading; I recently read about evo-devo, which inspired me to write this\] Phenotype is the interaction between genes and the environment. For any single gene, its environment comprises the other genes and DNA within that genome; the physical structures and biochemical processes within the organism; and the organism's external "environment" — geology and climate, as well as other organisms, including both other species and its own. Histones within the nucleus are the environment; enzymes in the cytoplasm are the environment; the mother’s womb is the environment; bullying at school is also the environment. This last environmental component — the influe...

This is a parody ad on YouTube based on the Christmas John Lewis (a well-known UK department store) ads. This is peak British humour! Enjoy!

Can someone explain fabric to me?

4h ago

I feel like a complete ***** asking this, but I really don’t understand how fabric that you buy in shops works. My first machine is on the way and I’d love to make some clothes for my little boy but I am falling at the first hurdle - fabric selection! I live in the UK, so the main places to buy fabric are large department stores like John Lewis, craft stores like Hobbycraft or specialist independent sewing shops/market stalls. I am quite lucky in that there are a few shops and stalls near me that do sell fabric and have a variety of bolts. Almost all the fabric I’ve seen is - to my very beginner eye - the kind of fabric you’d make quilts out of, normally found in fat quarters ...

Hotel Barista's wage ?

6h ago

I have 2 years of experience as a barista mostly from Starbucks where I made $15 an hour with tips making it about $18-$19/hr . I no longer work here and have now completed on boarding as a barista at a hotel for $15/hr . A few days prior as I was talking with the restaurant manager and she told me my wages were still under consideration giving the fact I would be a morning barista and the evening bartenders would likely make more through more opportunities for tips so they would like for me to be compensated fairly in that regard . Although this is appreciated there were some main factors that stuck out to me is I will be the only barista , they have been through a few baristas before me ...

I think I Shoplifted without realizing it

9h ago

I went to one of those department style pharmacies. On my way to the back to get a behind the counter medicine that I paid for at the pharmacy till. However, while walking to the pharmacy in the back, I saw my favourite drink on sale in a 12 can case, so I picked one up. When the pharmacist rang me up we were having a funny conversation, so I don’t even think he realized to ask if I wanted him to ring up the pop. After the transaction ended I walked back toward the front but kept laughing at what he said, and I think I walked right out without paying. I say that as I have no memory of paying for my drinks and none of my cards have a purchase but often use cash for small items. I had multip...

Two wattages for LED bulb. Which one is “real”?

9h ago

I’m in Austria, and I bought a small lamp at Möbelix (low-end furniture store). The lamp specifications say that the bulb should be maximum 25 watts. I asked the checkout person if this bulb was OK, because it says 3.4 W at the left panel of the package. I was told no, it’s a 40 watt bulb and that’s too much. They told me the 3.4 is a meaningless number. I didn’t buy the bulb there. Later, I went to Hellweg (big-box hardware store) and asked the person in the lighting department. They said it’s OK, because the bulb is really using only 3.4 W of power, and it’s the equivalent of an incandescent 40W bulb in terms of how much light it provides. They also said that the 25 watt lim...

Advice: Maximizing QB Chances with Infrequent Visits (RTW vs. Fine Jewelry?)

9h ago

Sorry LONG POST I'm in a tricky spot and would love some input from the community, especially anyone with experience at the Vancouver store. I currently live in a rural area, making my visits to the Vancouver boutique a serious 2-hour commute each way. I am in the store now over the Christmas holidays and plan to make significant purchases, but I likely won't be able to return until February or March. I know consistency is key, so I'm trying to make the most of this visit! My wishlist isn’t created yet but I’d like to wish for a BK25 or Kelly25 in any neutral color. Given my infrequent visits, what is the most efficient path to scoring a QB? Does the infrequency of my ...

My first Tod’s, not my first choice in color but help me love it!

I’m an American who is in Italy and was shopping for a new bag. I didn’t fall in love with the Ferragamo’s like I expected and so I planned to purchase this bag in brown. When I went to the department store, this color was 42% off. Essentially, it was impossible to justify spending the additional 42% on an expensive bag just to get a different color (in my opinion). I have other handbags and so this is not going to be my only bag I carry, which is why I felt okay not spending the extra. What do you guys think? I think she’s would be pretty versatile! I wear a lot of black and neutrals! I think I can fall in love with her in time!

Target is chugey as ****

9h ago

I saw a pic of target’s new store in soho to promote women’s fashion and I was reminded of how chugey target is. Target is a wanna be department store and it alway give me the vibe of “midwestern mom trying to stay cool”. Probably because that is who shops there. The whole concept of “I went into target for one thing, but left with the whole store” is what bothers me about excessive American consumerism. I prefer shopping at Walmart, because I feel like I gain a little of street cred going there. Edit: Chugey = tacky or basic.

Shortly after

10h ago

I was the one that had to be human. I’m an RN and during Covid I was a critical care coordinator (assistant nurse manager) to a lazy manager. I was working 6 days a week. 12-17 hour days. When I was home I was in bed asleep or in pajamas. My husband (the narc, for future reference) would take me out after work for meals. I was paying of course. I was the only one in the house working. He’d show off like it was his money and he was “treating” me. At home he had started yelling and became just plain evil. According to him I was no longer feminine enough. I was also apparently unsupportive because of truck and trailer business. I thought he needed a truck more than a new trai...

New to data storage and have a few questions

10h ago

I will start this by saying I am very new to mass data storage so please forgive any ignorance on my part. I was able to pick this 12TB SAS drive up for $80 USD locally on facebook marketplace and the guy let me know as I was leaving that he has a few more still sealed in their anti-static wrappers he would let go of for the same price. I am new to having a home server if you could even call what I have that but I realized pretty quickly I needed a much better storage option than a bunch of cheap external drives. So a couple of questions: 1. Is this an alright drive for the price? 2: How much of a pain is it to use SAS drives without specifically building a dedicated PC to do so? I know...

Wrongful Termination

11h ago

I am speaking on behalf of my mother, who was terminated from her job yesterday. My mom has been working at this place for almost 7 years now. Recently... (Some background information) She had a not-so-good encounter with a new hire. He would give her dirty looks, tell her to do certain chores, always boss her around, try to critique her every little mistake, laugh in her face, and even make sly racist comments. After some complaints from my mom, some action was taken, but not too much. Other employees were also making complaints about him as he was also giving them a hard time, but I believe he gave my mom the hardest time out of them all, as they worked in the same department. He recentl...
