In both metro and rural areas, only for travel between work, grocery and home. For long distance travel, public transport is so convenient I can’t think of any reason to buy a car for that price. Rental cars seems like a good option too so short-term use. Cheap bike+trailer is $800 max, without all the extra cost of owning a car (insurance, fee, parking, gas…). Just an update from our trip because a good chunk of the information we found online turned out to be outdated- particularly everything related to the middle section. First we did this and it was absolutely fantastic- highly recommended. We did the two day hike from Naxi to the Middle section and saw nobody the first day. If there is a bit of mist and rain it is magical.
