Am I being an *****?

19d ago

OK so after going down the rabbit hole that is this sub I went back to powder detergent; the Ariel Colour Professional UK to be exact. I wanted something with all the right enzymes, that protected the colour of my (mostly black) clothes. (btw please do let me know if you know of other suitable options in UK). So this now arrived in the mail from my trusty DIY store and I have absolutely no clue how to dose it. The instructions are more than cryptic. This is obviously a powder but dosage instructions are in ml, with the info that 55g=85ml. would I have to use the ratio method, e.g. for 225 x (55/85) = 145g? next problem: the columns seem to show amount of t-shirts vs the rows show kg - how ...

My solution for cable climbing

31d ago

I saw a post yesterday about someone's snake climbing on the cables. I then left a CRYPTIC comment and left to go to a doctor's appointment. I took unwell after it (but now I feel better) but I realize I left a bunch of people in the dark, sorry! 😅 Which has inspired me to share a post on my cable management in my big chonky girls enclosure. I use cable clips to fit the wire flush against the ceiling! She was climbing on the cables and she's a hecking full size chonk so she was pulling the plastic grate out, I was so scared she would escape so I went to B&Q (DIY store in the UK I don't know if you guys over the pond have it? So basically a DIY store lol) and ...

DIY wooden chessboard

42d ago

Hi all. So I’m the planning process of making a chessboard as a gift. My dream would be to make it checkerboard with two different woods but I do not have the skill or equipment to do that. I also like the idea of one that folds but I think that might be more hassle than it’s worth, despite it probably being better for storage. So, I was thinking of just doing a plain wood board and either painting it or using mosaic tiles to make up the checkerboard pattern (I’ve seen a few online which looked really cool). I am concerned the tile idea might make it too heavy overall, I’m not sure. I have also seen some painted ones look rather messy which worries me too. The reason I looked a...

Watch Storage - An affordable and functional option

87d ago

In 3 months I've managed to accumulate over 20 watches, most of them Casio. How did that happen? Anyway, I was getting frustrated with them overspilling a box within a drawer, and started looking at watch boxes. Couldn't really find anything affordable and decent quality, and as I want it purely for neat storage for myself, not any kind of display purposes, I started looking at other options. Someone on here was using a repurposed tool box so I went to my local B&Q (UK DIY store) and picked up a couple of Stanley tool boxes with movable compartment separators, for £7.99 each. Job done! I also have a bunch of straps etc, but once I sell two or three of the watches...

Help me understand my dendrobium

87d ago

Hi, This is my 2nd dendrobium... i couldnt get the first one to flower again; about 7yrs ago. Ive since been abit nervous to try again. I adopted this one after flowering from a big orange diy store for a reduced price. Ive already repotted n its been living in a shaded south facing window. But that spot is getting colder for winter. Can anyone give me any insight to the preferred care of denbrobiums...? I have roughly about 150 other plants including about 4 phalaenopsis n succulents. Im in the uk approaching the winter so wondering whether to relocate it to under grow lights or not...?x

Where to get steel sheets for magnet trays in the uk?

96d ago

I’m looking for some steel sheets, but I can’t find any for a good price or right size, the box is 34cm X 40cm, and I went to multiple DIY stores and they were too large, and I don’t have the tools for modification Where can I find them that are small or perhaps cut to the size you wish? Thanks in advance

Sourcing an axe in the UK

110d ago

Longtime lurker in this sun, but basically as the title suggests: I live in the UK, and am struggling to find anywhere (second hand or new), selling axes or the head only. I’m after a good splitter, and had seen online this guy raving about a ‘Wood Bullet’. Great, I’ll have a look. Most places do t ship to the UK, or if they do, shipping is the thick side of £200. Maybe some of these guys forging their own axes would be a bit more competitive I thought? Again, hard to get shipping to the UK, or ridiculous prices. One quote was $495 shipping for a 7lb head only. So. Does anyone on here know any places that sell something at least half decent in the UK? All I can come up with DIY ...

Where can I find PVC earth sheathing/sleeving in the US?

114d ago

I (UK) have a family member living in the US that want’s me to send them a reel of yellow/green sheathing/sleeving for insulating earth wires because they’re not available in the US (as I understand you don’t need to insulate earth there), it’s sold at every DIY store here but I said surely they sell it there too but alas I can’t find it available online anywhere in the US, any idea where I could find something like this or similar so I don’t have to post it needlessly at great cost from across the Atlantic?

Bauhaus DIY store - best option when visiting

116d ago

Hello, I have a short visit to Berlin next week and whilst many people would do a few museums, I'd like to use the opportunity to stock up on some DIY tools and other items. I have visited a Bauhaus in Munich before and found the selection to be much better than the UK where I'm from. I am staying at Alexanderplatz and found a few different stores, but wondering which one offers a good selection and figured I'd ask on here as difficult to tell from the pictures. I'd be travelling by public transport. Thanks in advance.

Best place to get a custom cut aluminium sheet

118d ago

I’m trying to cover a loft hole with a flat aluminium sheet, size 44 × 51 cm, and I’m not sure where to get it cut to that exact size. Anyone know good places in the UK like metal suppliers, DIY stores or online shops? Also, any idea what a reasonable price would be for one sheet, around 2 mm thick? Thanks :)

Should You Wax or Polish Laminate Floors in the UK?

142d ago

***Author, Written by:***  *P. Hirani (Wood flooring Expert)* Laminate flooring is a popular choice in many UK homes thanks to its affordability, realistic wood look designs, and ease of maintenance. But when it comes to keeping that surface looking shiny and new, many homeowners wonder: should you wax or polish laminate floors? The short answer is no, you shouldn’t wax or polish laminate flooring. While it might seem like a good way to bring back shine or cover scuffs, doing so can actually damage the surface. Let’s explore why and what you should do instead. # Why You Shouldn’t Wax Laminate Floors Unlike solid or engineered wood, laminate flooring has a wear layer made from a to...

Cost check on patch work?

155d ago

I was staying in an Airbnb and used some painter's tape to put up blackout material. We have had no problems anywhere else - we use it a lot at home, too - but the paint came off like the attached pictures. I've apologized and we're now going through the process of paying for the damage. But! The host says her handyman quotes her £50 for the paint alone, let alone the primer, filler, and 2 days of labor. In total, including lost income, she's expecting around £750. I'm an American so I don't know exact costs, but I feel like her handyman is wildly overcharging based on what I can find at DIY stores. I want to come to a fair price! I feel pretty guilty alread...

Status Air Purifiers?

185d ago

Here from the LTT video, but by coincidence this was on my mind today; I do laser engraving and other sawdusty stuff in my work so I have been meaning to look into keeping my air clean. I also run a little homewares/DIY store, and today a sales rep from a company (Status) visited me and showed their expanding product catalog, now featuring two Air Purifier models. Status are a budget consumer electronics brand in the UK - you'll find their stuff in large stores (ASDA, B&M, Amazon etc) as well as small independents like myself - so I think relevant for the UK market. Cheap stuff that works, generally. I'm wondering if their Air Purifier products are on your radar to rev...

New-home owners, total DIY newbies – how do we fix this leaking shower trap (and why is there a pipe inside it)? 🛠...

195d ago

We’ve just moved into our first home and discovered that the corner shower tray is *slowly* leaking into the floor void below. I cut a hole from below by going through the kitchen ceiling, and found the setup in the photos (see attached): * A chunky white plastic trap that pokes through the ply sub-floor. * A flexible corrugated waste hose feeding into it. * **A second pipe/tube sitting** ***inside*** **the trap body** – looks like an internal sleeve or dip-tube. * Water stains on the joists and a perished silicone bead around the tray. # What we’d love to know 1. **Can two amateurs with basic tools replace this trap themselves?** *Space is tight but we can just about reach it...

I ghosted the disabled creep I worked for.

222d ago

I (31f) worked for Ben(38m) for about a year. Based in UK. Ben is completely mentally capable and has full mental capacity, he has absolutely no mental disabilities. He is very intelligent, he regularly reveled in how he played people around him. Ben is blind and not very mobile, he needs the help of others and disability aids to move around. He was not always blind and was once very active. Bens life was plagued by tragedy and obstacles which were very severe. I went into that caring job wanting to help this man, I was looking forward to making a difference. Ben uses his disabilities in a gross way. To be creepy, manipulative and sexually abusive to the people around him. These entries a...

Grass seeds for Finnish gardens

285d ago

Hi all, once Spring starts properly I will need to do some major reseeding in our garden. The lawn overall is in good condition but since we had redone our garden some areas were reseeded late last year (hence not enough time to grow) and in other areas the ground has been very compressed due to machines driving around. So long story short: I am looking for recommendations on good premium quality seeds to apply after aerating and sanding. The selection in DIY stores usually is rather limited and from other countries like Germany and UK I am used to a wider selection of lawn care specialist providers. Help is much appreciated :).

Are these Crassula falcata? Any advice?

302d ago

I picked these up discounted a lot at a major UK DIY store (£1 each). I’m hoping that they’re Crassula falcata. However, I’m a little confused about whether Crassula falcata, Crassula perfoliata var. falcata and Crassula perfoliata var. minor are all the same species, or if there are different varieties of different sizes. I was quite happy to find these as I have heard they have impressive long lasting red flowers with a scent of cinnamon. I believe it’s from South Africa, but I’ve not had chance to do much research yet. I also believe it’s from us one of the parents of the famous Crassula Buddhas Temple.

Grain filler?

326d ago

What grain fillers are you guys using? I initially wanted to use Nitorlack as that seems to be the go too, but it’s hard to get in the uk unless you want to pay more in shipping than the cost of the product, same goes for the stew mac stuff. We’ve got some rustins grain filler in the workshop which requires white spirit to thin it down and takes 24 hours to dry. I’ve been considering using this but the drying time is off putting and I’m lot sure how well it will take water based stains/dyes I intend to use. I then started to wonder why I can’t just use the all purpose fillers you see at diy stores used for patching holes in walls etc.

Ex took the kids and when scorched earth AITAH?

Background - Me M25 - Ex (F22 Fake name will be Rose) Based in UK (Skip to The ending if you don't want the relationship/life backstory ) Met whilst working together at a garage/convenience store. Took her 2 months of flirting and borrowing my hoodies and then her finally just flat out telling me that she likes me to get that into my head. We quickly started dating, I got promoted to Store manager (Yes I told HR, they didn't care luckily). Honeymoon faze was very strong with us until about 4 months in when we found out Rose was pregnant. We had the discussion of what in the world do we do, even though we landed on separate sides of the fence I told her I wasn't going to lea...
