Outside of the US it seems pretty much standard that you have to walk through a serpentine retail store filled with perfume, alcohol, etc. on both the arrival and departure sides. I recently traveled through Melbourne airport as an international passenger and found the entire airport to be an unpleasant, cluttered mess.
