Review #20: A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength (Batch 4)

22h ago

INTRODUCTION: In my however many years of buying bourbon, while I consider myself pretty lucky overall, I don’t think I’ve ever lucked out as much as I have with this bottle. Here in Ohio, allocation days are set by the store, and while this includes all of the Buffalo trace and Heaven hill products, there are some crazy offerings that fall through the cracks. Examples of this are bottles like Jack 14, Bombergers PFG, and of course… A Smith Bowman. On a random Wednesday I was at a Giant Eagle grocery shopping, and eventually stumbled in the liquor store to see what non-allocated items they got that week. There it was, A whole case of A Smith Bowman, just sitting on the floor begging ...

Phar-Mor (and it's origins/successors)

1d ago

It may be a source of pride, or disgrace, but in the post-industrial era, Mickey Monus, with the help of David Shapira (of Giant Eagle) created the retail empire known as Phar-Mor, even when it later descended into one of the greatest corporate frauds in history. Meanwhile, over in Cleveland (and Akron/Canton), there was Marc's and Bernie Shulman's, which pre-dated Phar-Mor and had very similar business plans and tactics. Bernie Shulman's was the original, founded by the man of the same name, who was one of the founders of Revco. He opened his first mega-drugstore in the 70s. He later committed suicide in 1976, and his wife, Terry Shulman ran the business, and later ran di...

So the Acme in Parma closed and we’re just not going to talk about it?

3d ago

This is terrible. It was a great store, clean, decent prices, workers seemed happy. What a loss. I’m worried for what will take its place. Plane Fitness is an absolute cancer on the plaza. Meijer ***** with their prices and fake “We care.” I went and felt judged. Giant Eagle ***** with its awful prices and pervasive “screw you what are you gonna do shop at acme?” attitude that every store just drips. Aldi’s fine except it’s never going to have the selection. I’m really bummed. Is anyone else? Can we do anything to bring it back? Edit: not understanding the judgement here either. I’ve shopped at Giant Eagle for years and remember when it was affordable. What is ...

Please report and discuss what interesting products you're seeing at stores today. Many Giant Eagle stores (mostly in Columbus and now in the Northeast) and Ale Wine and Spirits have an arrangement with the state to delay visibility of certain products in their online inventory until Saturdays even if it was delivered to the store earlier in the week. These stores may also hold back some of the rare bourbons that they receive in their weekly delivery to [release on Saturday](https://www.reddit.com/r/OhioLiquor/comments/i01v77/saturday_release/) mornings. Many highly allocated products are still fully hidden on OHLQ.com but I don't fully understand the logic behind it yet.

2 Questions

So to preface I JUST started doing DoorDash as my temporary actual job, (only ~160 deliveries, 100 of them being in the last few days in the 2 years my accounts existed lol) 1. I feel weary to start accepting cash-I’m in an ultra busy market and though Jan’s been a bit slow I can still pull ~25/hr easily basically anytime. I see more issues arising with accepting cash then positives-Could any experienced drivers weigh in? Are you still given a guaranteed tip or is it a roll of the dice? 2. I’m gonna attach the photo, I’ve never done any shopping orders but got this the other day-in this case would I just be picking a already bagged order from the store or is DD really expecting me to...

DoorDash Support is absolutely WORTHLESS

7d ago

On 12/30 I was shopping a grocery order. I arrived to the store, and as soon as I sent my “Welcome” message to the customer, he messaged me to ask if he could cancel the heavy cream he ordered. I told him I didn’t know how to do that, so I would contact support. I did. They told me to say the item was unavailable and choose one of these three: “Found Empty Shelf” “Can’t Find Item Location” “Report Quality Issue” Those were my options. I asked again… which one…and sent a screen shot. The support agent said “any of them. It won’t be counted against you.” Fine. I did it, I deliver the order, and everything was fine. On the 1st, I noticed my pro shopper rat...

Tried out instacart…

Is this normal pay because $33 for 52 miles is insanely bad and on top of that i’d have to spend additional time in the store shopping. Sounds like a waste of time and i should just stick to uber/doordash.

Looking for a good credit card to replace our joint debit card

9d ago

Currently me and my wife use a chase debit card as a joint account for all our expenses such as eating out, groceries, household shopping, gym membership, sometimes travel etc. I am looking for a SINGLE credit card that would be good to replace this with. I would open the card and have her as the AU on the card as well. We do not share any credit cards together currently so technically this would be our first we would shared. We both already have a chase freedom unlimited card we use for individual purchases. CREDIT PROFILE \* Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of: \* None - looking for first card \* FICO scores with source: 820 \* Oldest credit card acc...

Shop and deliver snafu

10d ago

TLDR: I was forced to check out early on a shop and deliver and it dinged my shopper stats. Full story: I had a Giant Eagle order tonight that got really messed up. I got a 6 item order at 9:52 and was 5 minutes from the store. Arrive at 9:57 and make a judgement call - since they technically aren't closed yet I can't report that they are, but I also know getting the 6 items in 3 minutes is a no go. So I dash in literally hoping that if I'm quick they'll give me a couple of minutes to finish up. I get 3 items before an employee tells me they are closed and I can no longer shop, I have to check out NOW. As I make my way to the register I text the customer and give them a...

Why so many bags at the store?

15d ago

Recently moved here from CA and my wife and I have both been wondering- why do stores give you SO MANY bags for your stuff? Giant Eagle, Target, Walmart...cashier puts 2 or 3 items in a bag then starts another. Nobody even half-fills them, I always leave with a fistful of 1/4 full bags for my purchases. It's weird.

($4k) My wife and I had our dream wedding in an abandoned church in her hometown.

16d ago

EDIT: Reddit did some weird compression on the photos, so here's an imgur gallery of all our wedding photos incase anyone is interested [https://imgur.com/a/9IeVeFI](https://imgur.com/a/9IeVeFI) EDIT 2: Just wanted to shoutout our photographer since so many of you are complimenting his work. Tyler Maxwell with [Lost Trail Studio](https://www.losttrailstudio.com/) absolutely knocked it out of the park. In October, my wife and I had our dream wedding. Only 4 guests (our parents), a photographer and an officiant. The venue was an abandoned church a local business turned into a flexible event venue. The decor was mostly leftover supplies from my sister's (much more extravagant) wed...

List of Eligible Grocery Stores for Smart Card?

17d ago

Is there a list of what SoFi considers a grocery store for the Smart Card 5%? I know the terms mention Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club, and Target are NOT eligible but how about those that are? Giant Eagle? Trader Joe's? Whole Foods? Meijer? Kroger? etc

Drama free bourbon hunting @GE Lancaster

23d ago

There have been a lot of negative stories these past couple weeks about line skippers, line fights, stores not giving out product, stores releasing product a day early, etc… I wanted to share a story from this morning that shows why a lot of us do it. It’s somewhat long winded so just don’t read it if you’re not interested. I, like most of us, don’t have some inside source or anything so I watch the daily reports and if it looks like a good week, I plan on going to my Giant Eagle on Saturday (Lancaster GE). It looked like Stagg was going to be around today and I’ve had a year-long, comically sad series of events pertaining to me acquiring one. I’m sure I’m not the only on...

Perusing the grocery store daily

24d ago

My father and I have a daily routine of visiting our local Giant Eagle. He's in his 80's now and loves to play his lottery tickets. I'm disabled and can't drive, so it works out for me as well. This might seem counter intuitive but over the past several years of us doing this on a regular basis, I've snagged some fantastic deals. The other big deal we got recently was spiral sliced hams steeply marked down below $8. I got one for myself, and my dad bought 3, (one for himself, and two for his sisters). They've since gone up in price as of right now. But sometimes it seems to be just being in the right place at the right time. https://preview.redd.it/xqy4...

On the hunt for Digestive Cookies (biscuits). Any grocery stores confirmed to have them?

28d ago

I would like to find some Digestive Cookies/Biscuits to use in a recipe. I feel like I have seen them at Aldi or Giant Eagle, but I don't know for sure and I don't want to make a ton of trips to search all around. Does anybody know a store that has them for sure? Even if it is a world food/ethnic grocery store, I just want to know where they definitely have them! They are usually a product of the UK.
