What's your favorite FREE thing to do in Vegas?

1d ago

I'm doing a 'no spend month' to save up for an upcoming trip. My favorite things to do like frequent coffee shops and book stores cost money, so I'm curious what your favorite free things to do are. Favorite parks? Hikes? Nice views? I already frequent libraries, but would love to know which one is your favorite. I understand the obvious free thing to do is stay home, but I work from home so I like to leave on the weekends. I live in North Las Vegas, but have no problem driving.

I need help with with my campaigns' NPC.

1d ago

So basically I am a first time DM and also it's the first time me and my group will play by the official dnd rules so I am pretty nervous about this. But in short, I made an one shot that should last about 4-5 hours, but I need help to make my world a bit more full. The premise is that the party has to find kings daughter and on the day when the king gives them that task they will have one day to go around city, shop and get ready for the adventure. But now I don't really have NPCs that they can encounter in the city. I have only the bard that will sing a song that I created with subtle hints on where she is and what is happening to her and a lady in a book store/library that they ...

Audio Book Dilemma

2d ago

Hello! I am a college student and I love to read but I have a really hard time not getting distracted when reading, to combat this I usually have the book physically in my hands to read and notate in as well as listening to the audio book of the book at the same time to help me keep track of where I am (since my mind wanders so it helps me stay on track) My issue: I have been buying the physical books from local book stores/second hand/ or borrowing them. But the audio books I have mainly been using Libby, hoopla, and library accessible equivalents. There is a series I just started reading (Dungeon Crawler Carl) and I blew through the first book, and now that I am moving on through the se...

feeling so deflated. without sense of impending doom so depressed. gotta get more journals and write more and be even less online than currently. One device that does everything (smart phones) is only good for simple practical things (flashlights, notation, art, universal remote), but it can't be good for distractable things (engagement driven media platforms) because if they have your one device then that device is compromised and so is your attention span. Imagine if you had to use the bottle opener on a swiss army knife style multitool, and it buzzed because it was also a pager and then you lost your grip. that's modern smartphones and then after getting your bearings you ...

Returning Reader

5d ago

Some ramblings and questions from a returning reader. I haven't read the Dresden Files in about 15 years. I stopped at Changes, I think it was called. I actually considerably slowed down at reading fiction. Trying to get back into it this year. I don't know if it was because I just stopped reading less or I was kinda done with urban fantasy or that Dresden dying was a good stopping point I picked up Ghost Stories about a month or two ago at a used library book store. I have seen the book remaindered over the last 15 years so I'm glad I was able to get it for cheap again. Just finished Ghost Stories and while I enjoyed it, did have a few issues with it. My biggest is the cas...

has anyone ready any of these? i’m hoping they’ll pull me out of my reading slump

Trying to find a horror book I read years ago - can’t remember the name or find its existence on the internet.

6d ago

I’m trying to find a book I read a while ago good few years ago, but I barely remember the details. Here’s what I do remember: \- I know it had “Oracle” somewhere on the cover maybe part of a title. \- The genre was Horror/Thriller. I think it was a book for young adults but not sure. \- The cover might’ve been dark blue/purplish/ black but I could be wrong. The title covered the whole cover. \- I remember only reading a bit of it so I’ll tell you what I remember. I remember that in the book there was a school girl who had premonitions of violet and criminal things happen in your life and in her school. She would have random vision and the next day or so they would come tru...

Search results flash up for a moment, then disappear

7d ago

I’m on ios. I’ll search for something like ‘libraries’ and it’ll show a couple in the surrounding area for a flash, but then they disappear. I can’t bring them back up by zooming in or out. I know these places exist. Instead of showing me what I search for, the only things left on the map are related things like book stores. It’s been the same issue even after updates for a long time. I could search for McDonald’s and it’ll flash for a moment and then insist there’s no McDonalds that I’m standing right in front of! Drives me nuts. I don’t have any specific settings chosen that I know of, just whatever it first loads as. What’s going on?

I am a Vera

The self publishing boom has created an absolute glut of completely worthless books. I mean anyone who has shopped the markdown table at a book store, or browsed down the long tables set up in a warehouse or a parking lot for a library sale when a branch closes, knows there have always been worthless, useless books. But now, things have just gotten insanely out of hand. In UNDER THE HOOD, the fictional memoir of a fictional superhero Alan Moore includes bits and pieces of as part of the end papers of his WATCHMEN series, we are told of a woman who works in a supermarket and who has written hundreds of romance novels over the years. I can't remember her name right now, I'l...

WILL CHATBOTS REPLACE ALL HUMAN WRITERS?

11d ago

This is the ultimate dystopian concept: perhaps in the future, all human writers will be replaced by LLM systems. Posting the first section of a short story about two writers who are hired to help train an AI system to write fiction. Over time, the system improves—and the writers are quietly let go. The rest of the story is available on my Substack newsletter. Alone, I stood between the two lions. For the last seven years, the New York City Research Library on Fifth Avenue had been both my workspace and primary source of income, but that era was about to end. This morning, the Harvest Corporation sent me an email: my contract wouldn’t be renewed at the end of the month. I was dist...

Short story: the last human writers are hired to train the AI that replaces them

I wrote a short story about two writers who are hired to help train an AI system to write fiction. Over time, the system improves—and the writers are quietly let go. This is the opening section. Found pages from a book about Henry Kissinger in our house after a trip. We don't own a book about Henry Kissinger.

11d ago

A few months ago, my wife and I returned from a hiking trip. Everything seemed normal in the house. The dog wanted attention and food, not necessarily in that order, and the Roomba still wasn't charging. Nothing was disturbed. Everything was normal, that is, except for the two pages in the middle of the living room floor. They were from a book about Henry Kissinger. They had the aged look of books stored in a musty basement, yellowing and slightly water damaged. The thing is, we have never owned such a book. Never seen it before. We have no idea where these pages came from. We are baffled. We'd be grateful for any theories. (I originally posted this at r/Weird. A redditor sugges...
