Southern Gothic (Appalachia) piece (3,724 total words)

2h ago

Had an idea that refused to go quietly. It's totally word count is 3,724 words, I'll post the first 1000 but the rest is available on A03, would appreciate any and all critique and questions [Marked by the Mountain](https://archiveofourown.org/works/76047561) The fire cracked as embers lifted into the cool air. The warmth of flame pushing away the October twilight chill as people huddled around it in camping chairs and on old quilts and blankets. "Oh come ON!" Jeremy complained, reclined in his chair, turning his beer can around idly. "I'm so bored I'd watch paint dry—let's tell ghost stories!" "Don't get Bug started." Marci...

Best OC cities for a single young professional?

2h ago

Budget: $2800/mo and studios in buildings with decent amenities like pool/gym are welcome. I’m a decently young (31) educated professional who went to boarding school and then a UC for college. Pretty well off family background and having dated many women I finally decided on OC as I would prefer meeting someone of similar well off backgrounds. Lived in NYC/San francisco/abroad and now looking to start my 30’s in Orange County as a remote worker. Which cities are best for dating? I am decided between apartments in either Irvine on Michelson, Costa Mesa near OCC, and Huntington Beach on Garfield. Newport sounds fun too. Open to other suggestions. I like to meet partners at bars, gyms, g...

Non-alcoholic spirits?

2h ago

Is there anywhere in Hickory I can buy non-alcoholic spirits, like gin or rum? I've checked the grocery stores and Target, and they only have the pre-mixed drinks. Does the ABC store carry them? Trying to avoid a trip to Total Wine in Charlotte.

28 [M4F] Philly/nearby areas/USA- Seeking the start of forever.

Please don't reach out if we're not looking for the same thing, I have no interest in wasting my time or yours. No NSFW right out of the gate either please. Good morning/afternoon/evening/whenever this post may find you, and may it find you well! Title is cheesy, I know. But it's who I am, and I'm tired of feeling like I have to tone myself down in order to get into a relationship. I'm a pretty standard young man looking for a young lady to spend the rest of my days with. I've known that I've wanted this since I was a young kid and over 20 years later I'm still after it! I know these things can be a chore to read through so I'm quickly gonna go t...

Canadians moving to USA - questions

2h ago

My partner and I are considering moving to the USA. We live in Northern Ontario, our combined income is 140k a year, and we are both 25 years old. We are considering moving because the housing market is insane in Canada, and we are not sure how to afford rent/house, vehicles and groceries at this rate. We do not want to live paycheck by paycheck. Currently, 3 bedrooms in town go for 400k and need lots of renovations - not to mention higher quality homes with more bedrooms. We are considering Ohio - we have friends there who live comfortably, the weather is better than in Northern Ontario, and housing is affordable (nice 4-bedroom homes for 250k). Open to other suggestions in terms of regio...

Arbeitgeber genehmigt Nebentätigkeit nicht

2h ago

\- App-Entwicklung in eigener Sache.

More Housing: Who's going to be Vancouver's next mayor?

2h ago

TLDR: OneCity is the one party in Vancouver municipal politics that's left of centre and that's solidly pro-housing: "six floors and corner stores." I'm supporting William Azaroff, CEO of Brightside Homes, for the OneCity mayoral nomination. If you want Vancouver to build more housing (both market and non-market), to make housing less crushingly scarce and expensive, I'd encourage you to [join OneCity](https://www.onecityvancouver.ca/member-dues) before January 11, so you can vote in the February nomination. It's pretty quick, and annual membership dues are only $10. You need to live or work in the city of Vancouver (including UBC). \--- Municipal politi...

Part history book, part cookbook, never read anything like this

2h ago

My son got me this cookbook for Christmas last year because he knows I’m a bit of a prepper. I don’t have a bunker or anything, but I do keep shelves stocked with canned food and other essentials. Seeing all the hurricanes, floods, and power outages over the past few years have made me a lot more cautious. This isn’t your regular cookbook. Every recipe is designed to last months or even years without refrigeration, and the author includes the backstory behind each dish. It’s part cookbook, part history lesson, like a little window into how people used to survive when grocery stores and fridges didn’t exist. I’ve been cooking my way through it the past few weeks. Some of the rec...

Don't sleep on the strength training if you're physically able!

I started working out a month prior to starting Zep, and I was struggling! However, I knew that was the price I had to pay for being sedentary for so long. My body was adjusting and acclimating so I was only able to get myself in 3x/week for the 1st month. Prior to working out, my wake up call was walking to the grocery store with my lower back and feet aching, begging me to just go lay down. The grocery store was only 10 minutes away too smh. Then once I started Zep, I...

[37 MtF] - there is still time

2h ago

I picked a **** of a time to come out and begin living more authentically. These are truly dark days for the sociopolitical landscape of the USA, and the forecast isn't looking like it will get better before it gets worse. And yet? I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin. I have never felt more hopeful to be who the **** I am. One of the biggest reasons I took as long as I did to begin my transition is that I did not generally experience the severe dysphoria most trans people do, but instead have felt something more like a vague disconnection and apathy toward my physical form and how the world perceives me. But increasingly I found myself wondering what life would be like if...

Worried about possible carpal tunnel and in panic mode - please help!

2h ago

Hi, So I've been experiencing some wrist pain for maybe a year now (give or take) and it was really on-off. I'd have a few days to a couple weeks of pain in mostly just my wrist (no fingers or arm) and I would wear a wrist brace and take it easy. It would go away and then I might have no pain except for the occasional twinge for up to a couple months at a time. For context, I am 19F. I started a new job about three months ago at a meat department in a grocery store and it involves slicing meat at a deli quite a lot and also learning meat cutting from my manager, who is a butcher. I haven't had any issues the whole time I've been there till about a week ago. ...

AITA for saying "no"?

2h ago

It's short really, just kinda feeling guilty. I 21M worked at a grocery store when I was 18 and a little bit of when I was 19. When I turned 19 I transferred, inside the same grocery store from cashier to baker. In the baker section I met "Jade" (fake name) who I think was in her... late 20's early 30's? Maybe? She was kinda nice sure, never really hostile but a bit... odd. Nothing NFSW just odd, bad at respecting boundaries and wanted me to steal my mom's VINIL's for her lol, eventually her contract ended and soon after I also left (unrelated) but so, last time her and I talked, I was freshly 19, I'm now almost in the middle of 21, and just now, 2 mi...

Best thrift stores, Charity shops, and Flea markets? Looking for a reliable cassette player!

2h ago

I’ve been checking out any charity shops and record stores I see, but thought I’d try my luck here too. I’m looking to buy a Walkman/portable cassette player, and possibly a record player as well. Any tips on where to find them, or places I should check out? PLUS I quite enjoy buying just anything used, it makes me feel less like a consumerist rat, so any info helps!!

Global village- shea butter (African pavilion)

2h ago

Hi everyone, I recently visited Global Village and bought 1 kg of shea butter from the African Pavilion. There were so many vendors selling it, and I picked one. This is my first time buying shea butter directly like this (not from a branded store). After using it, I noticed the smell is quite strong and unusual, and honestly a bit concerning. I’m not sure if this is the natural smell of raw/unrefined shea butter or if it could be adulterated with something (like petroleum, machine oil, or other additives). I did apply it to my body/face as advised by the lady, but now I’m feeling hesitant to continue using it until I understand more. So I wanted to ask: • Has anyone here bought a...

How I would rewrite Happiness Charge Pretty Cure (Part 11: Episodes 36 - 39)

2h ago

Welcome back once again to my rewrite of Happiness Charge Pretty Cure. This is part 11 of my rewrite, so as always, I recommend checking out the rest of this rewrite series beforehand. As of now, half of the Happiness Charge team have now gained their innocent forms, as well as half of the Phantom Empire Generals being freed from their corruption. Now real events begin to unfold, so let’s continue. **Episode 36: Lots of Love! Megumi's Innocent Birthday!:** It’s Megumi’s birthday tomorrow, and her father, Masaru, comes home for the occasion after a business trip. She is very happy to see him, but this reunion sours almost immediately when she learns that the condition of her mothe...

Where can I buy beef tendons with meat still on them?

2h ago

I've bought tendons at Super Kyo-Po before but they didn't really have any meat. I'd assume the really specialized butchers like Los Gatos Meats could sell me tendons with meat still on but I'm wondering if any other asian markets or mid tier grocery store butchers (Whole Foods, Sprouts, Zanottos) might be able to help me with that. Thanks! source: trying to make gyusuji like i've had in Japan. it's sort of like an unctuous stewed beef primarily made with tendons but it still requires having meat to make it hearty.
