I spent months sober before I realized I’d been depressed my entire adult life.

36m ago

Most days, getting out of bed felt like dragging myself. I didn’t know what happiness felt like. The kind of depression that makes you wonder if everyone else is faking it too or if you're just broken. I didn't know that when I was drinking. I thought I was just tired. Stressed. Overwhelmed. Normal stuff. And alcohol helped, or so I thought. I was basically just drinking on every emotion. And my body wasn’t actually regulating any emotion. I was just going with the flow. I realized this about three months into sobriety. I was sitting in my car outside the grocery store, and I just couldn't get out. I just didn't see the point in going inside. Didn't see the poin...

What's a good little holiday gift for a ukrainian who can't go home?

38m ago

Hey guys, New Yorker here. I have a Ukrainian roommate (guy in his 30s) who, for obvious reasons, is stuck here, and will be mostly working and alone for Christmas / New Year's. He takes care of my plants for me when I'm at my mom's for holidays. I would like to give him SOMETHING, but I'm not sure what gift-giving is normally like in Ukraine. For example, I know that New Year's is usually more important than Christmas in the post-Soviet world, but I don't know if clementines and chocolate coins (two traditional little holiday gifts here) would make sense to him. I'm currently thinking uhh, socks. And maybe chocolate from a grocery store brand he likes ov...

Little bit of white fuzz?

42m ago

Hi, people of the plant world! I'm here to ask about a recently bought orchid (last week). I know that the orchids in grocery stores are really sad and they don't receive proper care, so l'm concerned about her. If you take a close look, the total bottom of the plant body seems rotten, the white fuzz. Or it's starting to rot. But most of the healthy juicy roots are coming out of there, so maybe she's fine. I'm watering when she's dry, so regular orchid care. What is that and what should i do? It looks like she's doing well. Thanks a lot for anything!

parking tips for the music of hans zimmer and others at orpheum theatre (san francisco 12/13)

43m ago

figured i'd share some parking tips for the hans zimmer show on friday, 12/13. sf parking is honestly a nightmare, especially for an 8 pm friday event, so planning is key to avoid the post-show chaos and the infamous civic center traffic gridlock. first, a heads up: check out Prked. this is the best kept secret. it’s an app where you can rent out private driveways and secured garage spots right next to the orpheum. it’s way cheaper than the major garages, you skip all the main street traffic lines, and it’s just a short walk. seriously, it’s worth checking before you commit to a garage. you absolutely need to beat the traffic. friday rush hour in this area (soma/civ...

Do I ditch Aldi or push through

43m ago

This community could perhaps be biased, but I need a second opinion. I live in a highly metropolitan area so I don’t have a car. I’m a diehard Aldi fan, especially with all of the rising costs in life. However, I am moving next month and at my new apartment there is a grocery store across the street (Safeway). Also across the street is a metro station where if I ride it for about 30 minutes (no changes, same line) there’s an Aldi right off the station exit. I did some price point checking at the other grocery store and I would be concerned that my weekly grocery bill could jump anywhere from 30% to 50%. I already have one of those large carts/wagons and the metro has an elevator so tr...

I passed my driving test at age 30!

46m ago

After years of relying on other people and inadequate public transit, I’ve finally passed my driving test at the age of 30. I’ve really appreciated seeing posts here as I’ve been working toward this goal, so I thought I’d share a little about my journey. I had (and still have sometimes) an intense fear of driving. After not doing it for so long, it just seemed impossible. How do you notice everything going on around you? How do you take turns of curves when you’re going quickly? How do you judge when it’s safe to merge? But I wanted to learn. I’d gotten my permit maybe 3 times in the past, but this time I was determined to learn. So, this summer, I decided I was going to driv...

Comparison Data: Independent Grocers vs Coles (Lamb is 43% cheaper)

48m ago

I've been tracking price variance in Western Sydney to see if the "Independents are cheaper" narrative holds up against the data. I logged prices at a major Fruit Market/Butcher vs the Coles in the same shopping centre today. The variance is massive: Meat: The Butcher is consistently 30-40% cheaper on red meat (Lamb Cutlets $27 vs $49). Produce: Fruit is cheaper at the market, but heavy veg (Onions) was actually cheaper at Coles as at last weekend. It seems the optimal strategy is splitting the shop, which saves about $30−40 on a standard family basket. I've visualized the data in a simple list if anyone wants to check the specific price points. I'll be manua...

Disability accommodation denied for promotion at work. Need advice.

50m ago

Location: New York First, for context, I am considered legally blind and had to surrender my driver's license 6 years ago due to a genetic condition. I can still see enough to do well at my job but do not have the ability to drive. I am currently the assistant manager at a grocery store. The store manager left about 2 months ago and I have been running the store since then. I was offered the promotion by my district manager and HR but had to submit paperwork for a disability accommodation because company standard operating procedures mandate a store manager must have a driver's license, specifically for getting to the bank for deposits. After submitting the paperwork my pro...

# Wrapped up an intense interview cycle. What interviews actually look like right now (US market) I wrapped up an intense interview cycle over the last few months and ended up with multiple offers, including one from a large, well-known tech company plus startups and non-FAANG corporates. I have 12+ years of experience, mostly backend and infrastructure. I wanted to share what I actually saw during interviews, because it is very different from what most prep advice still focuses on. This is based on \~50 interview loops across startups, late-stage companies, large corporates, and big tech. # TL;DR * Fewer pure LeetCode questions than before * Much more low-level design and real-world co...

Help me ID these mushrooms

56m ago

Hi! I recently visited your magnificent country. On the last day I wanted to buy some local things from the grocery store. I decided to grab some dried mushrooms, which turned out to taste really good! Im not able to translate which mushrooms these are using Google Translate. Could you please tell me what these are called in English or Latin?

Is this really how it works?

1h ago

For context: In August my girlfriend was stopped by the police and informed that she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest from 2022. A previous boss of hers is charging her for theft over $5000. The short version is that the store she worked at was targeted, cased and then robbed. At the time, her boss did not involve the police but fired her a few days after the robbery took place. They never spoke to each other again. Now, she has had to turn herself in to be formally charged. We have court on the 24th but we can’t afford a lawyer. We called legal aid Ontario and they told us she makes too much money (she works for Health Canada). We asked if they will provide us with a lawyer at ...

It's Weird Being True Sovereign Citizen and Living Around All These Cucks

1h ago

It's so weird. I don't remember signing a contract with "the government" that said I was a slave to a bunch of nameless bureaucrats who don't have my best interest at heart. Do you remember signing said contract? So, I'm driving past the local DMV (demonic movement violators) the other day, listening to "Gimme Back My Bullets" the timeless Lynyrd Skynyrd album, feeling really free and sovereign (license plate on my truck says: "Just Travelin" -that really pisses of the sheeple) and there is a line out the door of the DMV. Wow.. Sheeple cucks are literally overflowing out the door of the DMV like swarming rodents, a line winding around th...

I feel stressed, and I need to rant

1h ago

I’m sorry this is going to be all over the place. I, F19 feel like I should get my **** together already and have independence and stability because I feel like I’m running out of time. And I feel so miserable for many reasons. My partner M20 doesn’t work and we both live with his mum, I feel guilty and I try my best to help her pay for groceries/rent/whatever she needs. And I just wished my bf would do something and realise the effort I’ve been putting in to make things work. I have experience in retail across multiple positions since 16, and it took 7 months after moving to get a job that only gives me 1-3 shifts a week and I get paid fortnightly, 3 days after. Basically I don’t...

Neighborhood and Logistic Advice - 2026 Move to NYC

1h ago

Long post incoming! Hello, everyone. I’m planning a move to New York City in 2026 and would love some perspective from folks who know these neighborhoods well. Plan A is to renew our lease here in Salt Lake City in May for six months, giving my husband and me (32M / 29M) more time to save and for him to pay down some debt. Plan B is to move in May if a short renewal isn’t offered or if the rent increase feels unreasonable. Either way, our target move window is 2026 with a bit of flexibility. We’ll be visiting NYC in February to scope out neighborhoods, not to sign a lease. We’ve visited NYC about half a dozen times and absolutely love it. It’s a stark contrast to Utah, which is ...

Can An Ebike Be A Car Alternative For My Situation (details below)

1h ago

My boyfriend and I have a car but we desperately need another vehicle. The only cars in my budget are sketchy Nissans and cars that will quickly become sunk costs. There is a Trek bike store about 5 miles away and as someone who had an ebike and enjoyed it I'm considering it again. Relevant info: ● We have a car, so groceries and storage isn't an issue. ● We have no kids and no plans to have kids ● Weather is temperate but winters get pretty cold. Rain is sporadic. ● My commute is about 18 miles there and back, but I work split shifts so it's really over 36 miles a day (and that's if I don't go anywhere during the gap). So I would ideally need it to go about...
