The Indochinese Devastation - What if the Khmer Rouge “won”?

48m ago

“We must be like the ox, and have no thought except for the Party. And have no love, but for the Angkar. People starve, but we must not grow food. We must honor the comrade children whose minds are not corrupted by the past.” -Dith Pran As the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh approaches, many historians and studies of the current Cambodian regime find the time to take a look back on how it all came to be. The Khmer Rouge as an organization, or at least traces of its DNA can be found going all the way back to the First Indochinese War. The Indochinese Communist Party, the umbrella holding many of the region’s communist groups dissolved after the conclusion of the war...

experience lowering cat's blood pressure through diet?

51m ago

Really not keen on medicating my 17-year-old love for the rest of his life. I wondered if anyone here has had a cat diagnosed with hypertension, switched the cat's food to something vegan, and then re-tested the BP and found that it had improved (lowered). From 1999 to 2004, we fed our cats Evolution--but then the company changed the formula in some way, and it wasn't as popular with the cats. Since then, those cats we had back then and other cats we adopted since then (including the 17yo, who wandered into our lives in 2008) have eaten mostly fish-based food, like Weruva's Classic and TruLuxe lines.

Must try ingredients ?

51m ago

When I make jerky, it’s the simple common ingredients based on most recipes. However the one I add to the marinade that most probably don’t is pineapple juice and a glob of honey. I would say it’s a MUST TRY if you never have. The main ingredient’s being, soy, brown sugar, SPG, chilli flake, W sauce. Just kind of wing it every time. My question what must try ingredient do you add to your marinade that I might not have tried ?

How often do you adjust your brew parameters?

54m ago

When I’m opening a new bag, I more or less have an idea of what grind size/water temp/recipe I want to use based on process and/or flavors I want to highlight. With any new bag, I’ll start with what I think will be about where I want it. Then I like to try a cup at the finer end, a cup on the courser end, and dial in with other parameters from there. Occasionally I get a fantastic cup on the first try. When this happens, do you not bother exploring other parameters to dial in further, or do you accept the victory and enjoy repeating that same recipe as long as you enjoy it? Of course as coffee ages, I tend to tweak anyway but I’m just curious how other people approach dialing in a n...

Starting today, feedback on my "plan" please!

59m ago

Hi folks, I've been reading this subreddit for a while, and I just took my first dose tonight. I'd so appreciate some feedback on my "plan" from people who have been doing this. What am I missing? What could be improved? Context: 30f starting weight 210 looking to get down to 160. Had 3 kids back to back to back and have never been able to make a dent in the weight gain. My life is chaotic with a 4 year old/3 year old/8 month old and an intense job with little to no work life balance. Making sustainable healthy choices feels SO hard when I'm constantly exhausted and keeping 3 littles alive. Based on my extensive experience of trying to lose weight before (setting t...

What am I missing from Singapore? Why is it not an amazing place to consider living?

1h ago

I visited Singapore recently and really impressed intentional the city feels in its design. I’m not assuming it is perfect, so I’m really curious what locals and long-term expats think I might be missing. **TL;DR** With the (mostly sunny) weather, the affordable hawker stall food, the safety, the efficiency and the urban planning, Singapore feels like an amazing place to live. What downsides or realities am I not seeing? I'm assuming it's a mix of humidity, high cost of living and size of the country. **1. Transit and rush hour** I expected the kind of packed & overwhelming rush hours you see in Tokyo or parts of China given the density and size of the city. Instead,...

Intergalactic Food-N-Fun Station

This is a first for me so work with me here. I love food as I am a chef but also want to make it where it's for everyone. So I built this deck an look to change what I must but till then just want all to know the theme. M. Jordan had it all when he met the Looney Toons, so why shouldn't we when it comes to where and what we dream, live, and die to eat? I believe Gluttony had it right when being understood that everything is edible, it's just based on the perspective, so let's enjoy the ride. Do tell me what you think!

Seeking advice on food allergy management tool

1h ago

I'm(F26) anaphylactic to dairy and nuts, and eating out is always a bit of a minefield for me. I’m in grad school right now, and for one of my classes we’re supposed to come up with a project based on a problem we personally deal with. I was thinking about doing mine on the struggles of eating out with food allergies, and maybe exploring whether tools could make it easier — like something that shows which menu items are safe/adjustable, lets you share your allergies when making a reservation, or helps people share their experiences with how well restaurants handle allergies. Before I go too far with it, I’d love to hear from others with allergies: Does that kind of thing soun...

Is my dog sneezing because of winter or allergies?

1h ago

I recently switched dog kibble the same time it became super cold and my dog started sneezing. Akitas are known to be allergic to be chicken so I'm not sure if it's because I'm trying a new chicken recipe for hills science but he sneezes but he's not itchy at all. His poops are also still solid. If it's just a lot of sneezing could that be a sign he's allergic to his new food? Or perhaps its just because its cold? But he's an akita and akita are snow dogs so that wouldn't necessarily make sense either considering he's mostly in my house.

healthy 6 month old kitten acute liver failure diagosis cause unknown

1h ago

a week ago we lost the most precious kitten. he was by far the most affectionate animal we've ever met. he gave us so much love, always trying to lay on us and tenderly give little kisses and licks on our cheek or chin. he was just the sweetest most adorable little thing. we are so overwhelmed with grief but we know we were so blessed to have him in our lives. he usually had a healthy appetite and because he was the runt we doted on him, lots of fattening churu treats until he was about 4.5 months old but he was not overweight, he was quite small for his age. about 5 days before this happened i had abruptly switched to a new dry food (a brand with organic ingredients, high protei...
