How much would I need to save in order to live in Mauritius for a year without working?

2m ago

It’s a long story but around a year for now I believe I will need to live in Mauritius for about a year. I asked ChatGPT about how much rupees I would need for that and based on what I told it, it said around 360,000. I’m here to see how accurate that truly is. I would be in Port Louis in a small one bedroom apartment. Requirements would be AC, wifi, and a bathroom. (Off the top of my head). I would try to bring everything I need for entertainment and clothing to minimize spending there. So my living should be very minimalistic in spending. Only thing I can imagine spending more on is food. I’m on a carnivore diet and my main food is grass fed meats so there will definitely be some ext...

Debasement, Captured Exit, and the Long Arc of Monetary Power

3m ago

**Note to the reader:** This piece is a synthesis of ideas from many sources: historical research, the work of other thinkers, personal reflection, and extensive interaction with conversational AI used to explore, test, and organize those ideas into a coherent narrative. AI tools were used for drafting, editing, and improving cohesion and readability. The goal is not to present this as a single author’s original theory, but as a thoughtful synthesis intended to clarify patterns in the modern monetary system. Readers are encouraged to engage with the arguments on their merits, regardless of the tools involved in their presentation. # Part I – Introduction and Historical Foundations: De...

should I be eating more??

7m ago

Hi, I am currently trying to lose weight so I have been opting for healthier meal options and so I’ve started eating meals from Gousto. Since they note down the calories for each meal, I did a quick calculation and realised that my total intake is only around 1200. 200 for breakfast, 500 for lunch and 500 for dinner. I know that women are supposed to have 2000 calories a day but I the amount of food these recipes make for even one portion is really filling. Am I doing my calorie maths wrong or do I need to eat more?

Potentially false labelling in cosmetics: d’Alba

7m ago

Hi everyone. I’ve noticed something confusing with several products from the brand d’Alba. Many (all?) of them are clearly labeled as vegan, yet the ingredient lists include collagen, collagen water, bifida ferment lysate and methionine. These are the ones I’ve stumbled upon so far. I’m honestly a little overwhelmed right now. As far as I know, collagen is typically animal-derived, and methionine is often associated with animal sources unless explicitly stated as synthetic or plant-based. Apparently Bifida Ferment Lysate is not vegan either as it’s obtained by fermenting milk from captive mammals using Lactic Acid Bacteria. However, d’Alba doesn’t seem to clearly explain the ...

11m ago

Hey all, I'm a nerdy dude from the South Bay (Software Architect by trade) who has been spending the last 5 years building out **The LoN Project**: a 10-acre regenerative food forest and maker-space in East Lancaster. I finally have the prototypes for the irrigation and site systems working, and now I’m ready to scale. **My ultimate goal isn't just to finish my own site—I want to show others that this is possible and encourage people to come out here and build their own food forests and nerd spaces.** I used to have events out there, but I paused them to focus on infrastructure. Now, I'm bringing them back. I'm looking for a consistent group of people to come out...

Eco-dietetics: Can we ‘grow’ our scope?

13m ago

“Eco-dietetics” has been a term used in the literature that surrounds the broader practice context for how environmental movements have evolved food discourse and impacted nutrition recommendations (like vegetarianism, localism, food labelling and packaging, etc.). However, I want to bring this into a more focused conversation about how dietetic scope of practice is so limited to indoor work with humans. Yes, we as dietetics studied “human” nutrition, but as “food experts” (ugh, I **** this phrasing) we rarely build our knowledge about non-human agents and the vitality of ecosystems that feed us and will sustain us. I rarely meet a dietitian who knows the ins and outs of what act...

King Kong statue by Ottmar Hörl for the Völklingen Ironworks World Cultural Heritage Site

13m ago

I randomly stumbled upon this awesome 10-meter King Kong sculpture [here](https://www.ottmar-hoerl.de/en/blog/2019/09/King_Kong.php), made by the artist Ottmar Hörl as a part of the "5th Urban Art Biennale" at the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks, the only fully preserved steelworks factory in the world located in the German town of Völklingen, Saarland. Kong can be found standing guard in the "Paradise" section of the site, serving as the spectacular finale of the kilometer-long tour through the pig ironworks and observing the old factory in the distance, "as if it were trying to prevent its revival and that of the entire plant&quo...

Cat tree and automatic wet-food feeder (w/ freezer packs)

15m ago

We had to say goodbye to our nearly-17-year-old cat last week, and we'd love to find a home for his Cat Condos cat tree and automated [Cat Mate wet-food feeder](https://www.chewy.com/cat-mate-c300-automatic-dog-cat/dp/202195). The tree's in good shape, apart from some shredded sisal fiber at the base; ditto the feeder (we have many spare freezer packs for it too). Hoping someone can make good use of them!

Everything I ate as a t1 diabetic

18m ago

As a type 1 diabetic of going on 13 years, carbs come naturally to me I can look at the food and guess about how many carbs from eating that food over the years, but I do look at labels on things I’m not 100% sure about! I don’t actively count my calorie intake, I have target goals for protein and calories but don’t track them! I can look at a meal and know if I should eat it or not! Thanks for tagging along, I’ll be posting my cottage cheese cookie dough recipe and tuna salad tomorrow 🫶🏼💕 have a great day, don’t forget JESUS LOVES YOU! \#type1diabetes #fitnessjourney #food #wieiad #relatable

weird debate at lunch: banana vs tomato ketchup, what's better?

19m ago

so i was at a diner with some friends and they had one of those old school squeeze bottles of banana ketchup on the table next to the heinz. we got into a whole argument about it. some of us had never even heard of it before. one friend from the philippines swore by the banana stuff, saying its sweeter and more complex and way better with fries and grilled meats. the rest of us are tomato ketchup purists. it got me genuinely curious. beyond just personal taste, banana vs tomato ketchup, what's better in a more general sense? like, for different uses? im wondering a few things: what's actually in banana ketchup? is it really made from bananas? what's the flavor profile li...

Lost 7 stone after ditching £200-a-month takeaway habit – I can’t believe my reflection

20m ago

A woman who used to spend hundreds of pounds a month on takeaways has shared why it is worth splashing out on pricey Mounjaro [weight loss jabs ](https://needtoknow.co.uk/2025/11/10/i-felt-like-the-designated-ugly-fat-friend-and-was-too-scared-to-date-weight-loss-jabs-gave-me-a-glow-up/)– with the cost balancing out after she shed more than seven stone. Somers Arrowsmith wore a size 24 and weighed 17-and-a-half stone at the height of her weight issues, which saw her splurge £50 a week on pizza and burgers from local fast food joints or McDonald’s. The unhealthy habit wasn’t just breaking the bank – it was causing health complications that worried the young woman, including back ...

Mahoraga VS SCP 073;which one wins in a death battle?

20m ago

SCP-073, known as "Cain," is an immortal, humanoid SCP that reflects all inflicted physical or psychic damage back onto the attacker, rendering him indestructible. He possesses superhuman cognitive abilities, including a photographic memory, and causes all soil-based plant life within a 20-meter radius to die. His limbs and spine are replaced with an unknown, durable metal. “Weakness”: He still experiences the sensation of pain from the attack.

How much does nose sensitivity vary?

22m ago

I seriously NEVER smell the people around me unless they are homeless-level haven’t-showered-in-months or they are wearing a LOT of perfume/cologne. If I’m hugging someone, I’ll smell if they are sweaty from an intense workout or if they are wearing a normal amount of perfume. I have literally never noticed someone’s breath smelling unless I was making out with them. I can smell other things just fine (food, coffee, candles, the eucalyptus trees around my house, etc.) but I feel like it’s so rare that a person’s smell is strong enough to carry. I guess I’m just curious what others’ experience is with this as I’m paranoid that I’m basing my hygiene habits on my own smell s...

Spring is in the air…

What specific note reminds you of Springtime, not Summer (with coconut, mango, pineapple, or other island scent notes) but TRUE SPRINGTIME?! For me, it is without question, LILAC I am from the Midwest in the US. We have specific trees & bushes with this flower. It is a fleeting plant. Once bloomed it seems to last 2 days. So to capture this delicate with a bit of an edge, feminine, nostalgic, clean note can be extra difficult. Normal or concerning?

23m ago

TLDR: cat suddenly chewing on things, is this normal or a cry for help? Adopted a 1.5 year old American long-hair about 1 month ago. She's been to the vet 1x and great health. Eating food and drinking well enough for her month 1 adjustment. Hasn't shown any major behavioral patterns or concerns up until now - The last 2 days she has thrown up, mainly hairball and fluid. Just small amounts, 1x per day, not seeming sick or lethargic, still playful. But today, after she threw up, she started acting obsessive about chewing on things. She searched the house frantically for things to chew on: chords, cardboard, curtains, plants. She has been obsessive about chewing 1 faux plant in pa...
