Insurance company told me I can get a discount if I install a certified battery backup

6h ago

Renewing my homeowner's insurance next month and my agent mentioned they're offering a premium reduction for homes with UL9540 certified backup power systems. Something about reduced risk of loss from outage related damage like burst pipes and spoiled food. The discount isn't huge, about $180/year, but it's enough to make me look into it seriously since I've been wanting backup power anyway. The catch is it's not just about having UL9540 certification. My agent said they also want proof that the system passed UL9540A testing, which is a separate fire safety test that covers thermal runaway and fire propagation. I assumed anything with UL9540 w...

Used my authority to cater the party to the gluten free vegans 😈😈😈

6h ago

Picture: Gluten free, vegan Oreo brownies from a gluten free bakery 🧁 for the monthly office birthday party I instated. I have spent my entire at all life managing a restricted diet. Not because I’ve been eating disorder, but because I have a health condition. And it’s always been a pain in the butt. Everyone always gets conventional food, and then one side option for me. They get a giant sheet cake and a pre made cup of chocolate mousse for me. I always get a lil 🤨 that they can’t just pick something I can eat that everyone can eat with me. I don’t like feeling excluded or different. So now that I’m in charge, all the food is gluten-free and vegan. ✊✊ It and I’m not ...

Consistency is key [1 year of progress]

**May 2025 -> May 2026** **Height: 155cm (5’1”)** **Body weight: 72.4kg (160lbs) -> 48.8kg (108lbs) \[23.6kg (52lbs) drop\]** **Body fat: 40.7% -> 24.4% \[16.3% drop\]** It’s been one year since I started my fat loss journey and tracking my food, and, well, here’s the result: I achieved my target weight (52kg (115lbs)), and lost a few more organically; from being obese to losing weight, and then gained back all the weight in 2020, to being the fittest I’ve ever been in my twenty-something years of life. Here are my takeaways, besides the obvious that we all have heard already: 1. Plan ahead your meals I learned this from a post on here: on the app, u...

My first tomato plant - new mom energy for sure

6h ago

This is my first attempt at growing a tomato plant. I read a lot of threads here before embarking. I got him a big container and good soil and a marigold. I named him Major Tom and her Mary. Tom got planted on Saturday and I have watered him every day so far as I read to do that til established and then to do the finger test and water as needed based on how quickly his soil gets thirsty. We have obnoxious starlings and loads of bunnies at the moment, plus squirrels and foxes, and spring storms with hail and tornadoes, so he's in a container with wheels to come inside on storm days and has a zip-up white mesh jacket that fits his house. He doesn't seem happy. His leaves look k...

🚨 Looking for People ON THE GROUND in Somalia for a Sadaqah Charity Project 🚨

6h ago

As-salamu alaykum everyone, We are looking for trustworthy people currently based in Somalia who are actively involved in charity work or willing to help organise and carry out sadaqah projects locally. Our aim is to help raise funds internationally through platforms like GoFundMe, while ensuring that the money goes directly towards real projects on the ground in Somalia — such as: • Food distribution • Water wells • Supporting orphaned families • Emergency aid • Medical assistance • Ramadan/Qurbani projects • General sadaqah initiatives We are NOT looking for middlemen or online-only organisers. We specifically need real people physically in Somal...

A pair of Washingtonias

6h ago

I was visiting my hometown last weekend and while in the next town over (Seaside, CA), I saw the city had two of its median planted Washingtonias cleaned up with dead leaves and leaf bases removed, but they managed not to over trim the crowns. I don't normally pay attention to Washingtonias back home because they're so common and usually look like trash (near constant drying sea winds, sandy soil, lack of water), but these really stood out. The one on the right is the standout with its more open crown and softly drooping leaf tips.

Why I am optimistic about Malawi economy future

6h ago

A recent article by development economist Deena Mousa asks why we don't know why Malawi is poor.https://newsletter.deenamousa.com/p/we-dont-know-why-malawi-is-poor It's a well-researched piece, but it reads like most development economics writing — an outsider looking in, cataloguing problems with intellectual precision but limited conviction about solutions. To her credit, she did identify the core issue clearly: the fertilizer subsidy program consumes up to three-quarters of the agriculture budget in some years, is politically untouchable because rural maize farmers are the median voter, and resources that could go to roads, irrigation, or diversification are swallowed into p...

I built a Meal Planning, Shopping and Pantry app to function like I meal plan, shopping and manage my pantry.

6h ago

**It was a Wednesday in January,2025. I had a head of celery, pickled jalapeno peppers, carrots, and yogurt I'd forgotten about. I stood there for twenty minutes. I closed the fridge. I ordered Panag Curry from our favorite Thai place, which beats fast food.**\*\* \> \> That kept happening. Not occasionally. Several times a month. A full fridge, a working brain, twenty minutes of standing, and a $ 45 DoorDash receipt I didn't want. \> \> So I tried the meal-planning apps. I tried Mealime. It wanted my email before showing me a single recipe. I tried Paprika — it's a beautifully built app, and I still own it. But it doesn't know what'...

As 20-year-old lawsuit continues, poultry growers and environmental advocates are in limbo

6h ago

Oklahoma has been locked in a court battle with a handful of large poultry companies for more than two decades. But for the first few months of this year, it seemed like the lawsuit might be coming to a close. In early March, dozens of people filed into Judge Gregory K. Frizzell’s Tulsa courtroom to hear him [weigh proposals](https://www.kosu.org/energy-environment/2026-02-13/tyson-cargill-agree-to-pay-for-cleanup-of-oklahoma-river-after-20-year-lawsuit) to resolve the case and end most of the appeals. Poultry professionals packed the benches hip-to-hip behind lawyers representing Tyson Foods, Cargill and Peterson Farms Inc. Across the gallery, the rest of the audience had a little mor...

Kitten has had noticeably calmer temperament since feeding hills science diet kibble

6h ago

Just an observation. I’m based in the UK and the family I got my kitten from was feeding her whiskas wet kitten food so I continued. I tried to feed her more expensive food but she largely turns her nose up at it. I fed her Iam’s kitten dry food from the start as it was readily available and I didn’t want anything too hard to obtain. I got 50% off a bag of hills science diet kitten kibble so have been mixing that 50/50 with the Iams for the last month or so and she is noticeably more relaxed. It could coincide with her age. She is now 6 months but I have a feeling it’s something to do with the food? Less cocopops sugar cereal perhaps? I’m also giving her half a lilys kitchen pate...

Which one do we like more??

6h ago

I was going to do a water usage one, but since AI/data centers don't actually "use" water in the same sense that producing food does, it wasn't an apt comparison. Question re: spray dried banana powders and added maltodextrin + qualitative tests for maltodextrin or other additives

6h ago

Hello r/foodscience I do some small scale plant tissue culture work as a hobby. Some of the media I work with use banana powder as an additive. When you look up the formulations from commercial media providers, it's indicated that the banana powder used in the original recipes is a spray dried product containing \~50 percent w/w pct added maltodextrin. I have been trying to reproduce the formulations on my own rather than buying pre-mixes. I've noticed that suppliers of 'banana powder', typically sold for food or cosmetic applications, often don't indicate if there is any added maltodextrin or other carrier agents in the product. One local supplier's product w...

Best Hair Serums in 2026 Frizz Control, Shine, Heat Protection & More (Complete Guide)

7h ago

So your hair is frizzy, dry, or just refusing to cooperate. You've tried conditioners, leave-ins, and oils — and nothing quite holds through humidity or heat styling without weighing your hair down or leaving it greasy by noon. Hair serums sit in a specific gap that other products don't fill. They're not a wash-out conditioner and they're not a heavy oil. A good hair serum coats the cuticle, smooths the surface, and seals out humidity — delivering frizz control, shine, and heat protection in one lightweight step that doesn't feel like anything once it's absorbed. The problem is the market is flooded with serums that promise silky, glass-like strands and de...

Did you know certain everyday products can trigger a failed breath test on your IID?

7h ago

Alcohol-based mouthwash Some energy drinks & fermented foods Certain medications This isn't a device error. Your IID is doing exactly what it's designed to do - detecting trace amounts of alcohol on your breath. Here are some common sources of trace alcohol you might not think about: Bread, especially fresh-baked or sourdough Kombucha and some fruit juices Liquid cold medicines and some cough syrups Mouthwash containing ethanol Certain sauces, marinades, and fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchi The amounts are small — but small is enough. Pro tip: Wait at least 15 minutes after eating, drinking, or using any oral product before testing. Rinse your ...
