Castenada (Part 32)

*Dream-Talker Ritual, 1984, by Amaya Mitchell.* In high school I was spending more time at the movies than anywhere else. There was a six-plex out on West 11th called Movieland. I learned the ushers’ rounds and the sweet spot to slide into a row without getting the flashlight. The first movie I snuck into was *Alien*. I bought a showing for *The In-Laws* and ducked into the next auditorium when the trailers started. And let me tell you, I *loved* it. People were practically biting their nails. ****, I had to walk the length of the lot afterwards to collect myself. I knew at that point that I wanted to create something very similar and tell stories of my own. After that I started sneaking...

What can I add to being frugal that I have not already done, or thought of?

4h ago

Aside from looking in the subreddit for ideas, I'm looking to actively see what I can do to boost my frugality to continue increasing margin at the end of the month. There's lots of times I haven't thought of something that otherwise is absolutely brilliant. What I do now is listed below: \- Brew my own coffee at home on a Keurig \- Batch cook chicken breasts or thighs to get 3-4 days worth of food I can just pop in the microwave \- Use cold water always when washing clothes for electricity cost \- Purchase groceries and other necessities (only if on sale) at a wholesale club to have a months supply \- Use a filter pitcher for tap water to save on bottled water \- Shop...

Silver finds!

5h ago

This is most of the silver that I have collected since spring of 2024. I have found a good chunk at thrift stores. A couple pieces from Facebook marketplace. Most of the coins I bought from a local pawn shop that I get good deals as I am a frequent buyer. And a small chunk I got from Ebay. Most items I have bought for around the melt value (or face value). The jewlery I paid a decent price for. Most of it I paid under its resell value. For example the red coral necklace I paid $10CAD for. This isnt my full collection. I have other jewlery. Some rings and small thin chains. And a few more earrings. Probably another $300-$500 resell value worth. I have BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). A...

used ski gear in greater boston?

6h ago

hi everyone! super looking forward to this new ski season, only issue is i need a new jacket, and im not sure where to get one that’s not over $500. we moved to boston last fall and i left my old one behind. for the last many years i had a huge xxl columbia shell that i stole from my dad. it was huge on me (i’m a 5’6 woman) and that worked at the time back out west, it obviously doesn’t get as cold there. i went skiing last winter only once, i just wore my patagonia puff under my columbia rain jacket and it worked just fine for that trip, but obviously not ideal. i guess i’m just asking if there are any used gear shops in and around boston! i’m okay driving out of state too. ba...

hi everyone! super looking forward to this new ski season, my girlfriend and i both bought new skis at the country ski expo and were so ready to hit the slopes. only issue is i need a new jacket, and im not sure where to get one that’s not over $500. i just spent a good chunk of change on the skis, i have working boots and poles and everything else, i just need a new jacket. we moved to boston last fall and i left my old one behind. i had a huge xxl columbia shell that i stole from my dad. it was huge on me (i’m a 5’6 woman) and that worked at the time in oregon, it obviously doesn’t get as cold there. i went skiing last winter only once, and i wore my patagonia puff under a rain jac...

Favorite Local Shops?

6h ago

The holiday season is upon us again and while its not always possible to get all your gifts locally, it definitely has an oversized impact on the local community and the things that make Biddeford/Saco great. There's a lot of promotions going on even on main street on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and throughout the holiday season. Definitely take advantage of those promotions especially if you're feeling a budget crunch yourself. I mean let's get real, its not like the big box stores are a great deal anymore either. Here's a short list of local businesses and feel free to shout out your favorites below, especially if they provide something that the big box stor...

Any good thrift stores for a budgeting student? (Not Talize, **** Talize)

7h ago

Title says it all, I’m looking for some thrift stores in the area that won’t outrageously inflate prices and/or break the bank. I won’t go to Talize any more, my last few visits have all been the same unpleasant experience as they are incredibly inconsistent (often borderline fraudulent) with their pricing, and they’re rude as all **** when you point that out. As though it’s somehow my fault that they left the $4.50 dollarama sticker on a game that they were trying to sell for $12! Anywho, tiny rant over! If anyone knows of some thrift stores in the area that still have decent pricing I’d love to hear some recs! The cost of living ever-rises, and having some reputable and cheap...

Best thrifting in Philly with dressing rooms?

8h ago

Goodwill on Parkside Ave, 2nd Ave in South, and 2nd Ave in Pennsauken all no longer have dressing rooms to try things on. Any recs for actually affordable thrift stores (not vintage shops) with dressing rooms? Only one I’ve found so far is Second Mile in West.

Travel plan for May

10h ago

Hi all, I’m travelling next May with my 1.5 year old. This is the rough plan I’ve made. We decided to skip Nara and major areas of Tokyo this time around. I’m still trying to figure plans for Osaka. Are these places stroller friendly, should I take stroller or will carrier be enough ( anyway I don’t expect my toddler to sit in the stroller). This is my first time in Japan. Please check and advise on any thing I’m overlooking. 📍 May 11, 2026 – Tokyo Day 1: Asakusa & Ueno • Senso-ji Temple • Nakamise Dori • Tourist Information Centre (Observation Deck) • Kappabashi (Kitchen Street – knife shopping) • Ueno Area • Tokyo National Museum ⸻ 📍 May...

Christmas Present Advice

18h ago

hi all, this winter break i am going to italy to spend time with my boyfriend and his family. i am leaving pretty soon and i have started getting my presents done early. i just have one problem: i have no idea what to get my boyfriend’s dad. he is a mechanic and he loves cars, formula 1, and old music. so far i have gotten him a toy car from one of his favorite shows (KITT from Knight Rider if anyone knows the show), some chocolate, and an old Elvis CD i found at a thrift store. i know that sounds pretty sufficient, but i got my boyfriend’s mom quite a few more items (she is a lot easier to shop for, haha) and i want to make it even. please let me know if you have any ideas

Which clubs do I need the most while learning the game!

19h ago

Hello all, Recently my father mentioned to me that he wants to start golfing again. He hasn’t really played since the mid 2000s and asked if I wanted to play with him. I thought it would be fun to get outside and hangout with my dad. I’ve only taken a few coaching classes when I was in middle school so other than that I’m new to the game in general. Because of this I did not want to spend a lot of money on clubs and accessories so I began hunting my local thrift stores. I’m right in the middle of the southeast that’s surrounded by large golfing communities so I figured I would be able to find some old clubs somewhere. After a few weeks of searching thrift stores and pawn shops I...

Best alternative clothing stores?

20h ago

I'm looking for a place to shop for on Black Friday and most of the popular clothing stores in the city are not exactly my style. Thrift stores seem to have all the good stuff taken whenever I go. I have had a few trips to Hot Topic but they are pretty expensive and I would prefer a place with a wider variety of clothes for many different alternative styles, so not necessarily just the music subcultures, etc (so for example it could also accommodate goblincore--I'm not goblincore myself tho). Any recommendations are welcome!

What’re your favorite gems in the Montavilla area?

20h ago

Howdy fellow Portland freaks & geeks, I just moved to the Montavilla hood. Can anyone suggest their top picks for: - Cute coffee and tea houses? - Parks and green spaces? - Locally owned businesses of any sort! - Thrift stores and vintage shops? - Restaurants and eateries? -bakeries especially any with sourdough! I'm looking for any hidden gems and local favorites, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Artisans/Artists/Framers/Metal workers of Sacramento - help finding or commissioning lots of little frames like this?

21h ago

Hi, I am referring to the small frames, not the outer frame. I am looking for about 50 of these, all different shapes and sizes between 2 inches and 6 inches so pretty small. I need them to be gold, simple, thin, small frames. Some round, some square. You might think this would be easy to find but its very difficult. I have shopped online and at thrift stores and have not found something simple and small like this. I have reached out to a couple framing stores and they said they don't do this. I am looking for advice or any framers, metal workers, any kind of artisans in the sac area who feel they might know how to make a lot of these? Help! Thank you.

What you find expensive?

21h ago

I'll be making a winter course for B1 in Berlin during two months (jan-mar) and I've no idea of how much anything costs. I'll be homestaying in a random place, which will provide me 2 meals per day, so also no rent, but I'll have to pay for the rest (naturally). I'm from a tropical country (🇧🇷) and we are in the middle of the summer, so (I suppose) buying clothes here would be cheaper. I just fear that it wouldn't be tough enough for the winter there, in Germany. My mayor worries are with money. I've no idea how much anything cost. How much can I buy with 1€? Would 10€ be expensive for a meal? And for a T-shirt? Is there any kind of informal &qu...

Want to play music for a good cause?

22h ago

I have a volunteer gig lining up musicians to play sets at ReClaim It's thrift store in NE Portland on the first Wednesday of the month. We usually have two acts, each playing a 1-hour set, starting at either 3 pm or 4 pm. Feel free to DM me if you're interested! No pay but you get to support a nonprofit and you'll receive a gift certificate to shop for funky merchandise. We'll also promote you with the social link of your choice. If you're interested but unavailable on the first Wednesday, ReClaim It is also good about accommodating other dates - it's just cool to have live music in the store. Thanks!

I Tried Making Money Online So You Don't Have To (Here’s What Actually Worked in 2026)

1d ago

Let’s be real. Your feed is probably a graveyard of dead "get rich quick" dreams. “Earn $10,000 a month with one weird trick!” “I made six figures while sleeping on a beach!” Yeah, I clicked those too. And for years, my online "hustle" looked like this: a messy notes app full of abandoned ideas, three followers on a niche TikTok account, and a profound sense that I was missing a secret everyone else knew. Then, in late 2024, I got fed up. I decided to treat "making money online" not as a lottery ticket, but as a real, messy, personal experiment. I stopped listening to the gurus and started listening to my own gut. And somehow, in this noisy, ...
