If you continue to struggle to judge and capture the correct values — light to dark - one way is to take ten inch X two inch long card, measure ten evenly-sized rectangles along it and paint them from very light gray to black…. if you think it will help, punch holes in the center of all before you paint each gradient so you can look through them (or simply hold them “next” to the value you’re trying to get correct) to match them to your model/reference, then mix, check, and transfer that value of color to your painting. Art stores sell these aids and you also may find a strip — or single 5-grade grey - at a photography store.

There's this game I've been trying so much to find that I used to play as a kid. I feel like I’m constantly attracting loss prevention / employee suspicion and it makes me uncomfortable and I want to know if/how I can address it to be able to shop without a dozen “can I help you find anything” questions. Or am I imagining it? I have never shoplifted. Not once. Let me start by saying this I’m a working man. Not a humble one, mind you, but a working man nonetheless. I’m telling you this so you don’t get the wrong impression, so you don’t think I’m some street-level hooligan hopped up on whatever’s going around. No, I’m nothing of the sort. I live by structure. Every day, I wake up at 6 a.m. sharp. I spend thirty minutes stretching, make breakfast, get dressed, and leave the house by 7:15 to catch the bus. My routine isn’t just in the morning it carries through my whole day. I keep the house clean, everything in its place. The dishes are washed as soon as they’re used. There’s a lot of things I would change about the process if I were to do it again- most notably, the paints. Acrylic paints from craft stores are a lot cheaper than the specialized figure paints sold at hobby stores, but after working with both, I understand the difference. Acrylic paints designed for canvases leave a much thicker residue behind, whereas mini fig paints, while less pigmented, don’t leave as much depth. Using acrylic paints too much tended to cover up the details on the faces. I’ve since bought some more colors of the watered-down paints so hopefully I can at least keep the skin tones nice and light (as in the binding agent, not like whitewashing 😳) in the future.

Should this be a thing? Is it better to use tubes with tubes and pans with pans? My tube paints are Daniel Smith and my pans are from Andrea Nelson's online store, so I'm not sure what brand they are. I just feel like mixing the two causes more struggle in blending sometimes. Hi there! A start-up company in Waterloo Ontario asked me in 2002 to propose an illustration for their logo and branding. I completed a full colour design and a woman who worked for them physically stole the artwork from me (and left the building), and evidently provided it to them. It was always the eyes that got me. Every other part of the human anatomy I mastered. Hands have become routine, where my colleagues struggled. Complex movements and poses I can replicate without a model present. No matter how hard I try, though, I couldn't get the eyes right. The physical aspect of eyes I could draw with ease, but the problem was that when you looked at the eyes I made, they just looked flat. They never stared back at you as they should.
