Full disclaimer that I did not have time to research this as much as I wanted. That is unlike me and I have always researched and cared deeply for all my animals, including my first beta in high school that lived 4 years despite not the best conditions ( I was given the fish). We last minute got a betta today as in went to get dog toy came out with fish. I research and ensured I had everything I needed. Got her a 10 gallon tank, lid, heater, filter, etc. It all came In a start up kit. I also got multiple different live plants and hideouts and of course pellet food. Now this sweet little gal is home and I am starting to really research deeply the entire process or setting up the water an...

What do I have?

10h ago

TLDR: bought fish at a big box retailer - need help identifying them correctly. We've had them for about 4 days. Long story shorter - we purchased some fish from a big box pet retail store. I am not sure what we have. When we purchased them we were supposed to be getting a Jewel cichlid (the orangish one); a Demasoni cichlid (grey and black), and a convict cichlid (the small black one) - and this one started off just black and now looks like he's getting some color. I like these guys and I think they are all a variety of cichlids but after some looking around on the internet I believe the biggest one (grey & black) is our convict cichlid. And I have no idea what the ot...

Big Al’s is the worst

18h ago

Have never been there, but decided to run in for bird pellets since the PetSmart at Steeles has left us. It was appalling to say the least. I truly don’t know how we still have stores that are allowed to house living creatures so poorly. Can someone please rescue the poor, sad cockatiel in the middle of the store 😭

Advanced snail owners please help lol

1d ago

Two fair goldfish turned into one fair goldfish. It seemed bored and lonely so we got four mystery snails from petsmart. We’ve had them for at least two months now. I did as much research as I could and have looked multiple times a week to check for any egg clutches. We noticed a few days ago two of the snails were getting freaky so have been on the lookout. Anyway, I haven’t seen any clutches. It’s a 20 gal tank, all artificial decorations. Never had problems with algae but the next day after the night we noticed the snails getting freaky there was a brown coating on EVERYTHING in the tank (panic, research). Long story not so short, I cleaned the tank today and did a 50% water change,...

robo hamster help!

1d ago

hi reddit! this is my first time posting, and i’m using my boyfriends Reddit account, so i’m sorry if i’m doing anything incorrectly! for some backstory! last month i (admittedly without researching first) adopted my little Lillie from petsmart, and she is the first robo i’ve ever had! my previous hamsters were all syrians, but after my most recent ham passed very tragically to a sudden brain aneurysm, i was too scared to adopt one for years. but i saw this sweet little girl who ran up to me at petsmart every time i passed by her enclosure, and i knew i couldn’t walk out without her. multiple questions, but the most pressing one, i absolutely cannot get her to chew on any toys i...

I'm new here but needed somewhere to vent

2d ago

I went to PetSmart today because I decided to finally cave and get the dog a Michael Myers squeaky toy. But Michael was gone, only a few lone pennywises left, and two full displays of Christmas items had moved in. Go to bath and bodyworks, all the Halloween themed stuff is gone, replaced by "gingerbread" and whatever else. Home depot, Michael's, the grocery store, ******* everywhere has put Halloween items on for half off to get rid of it while Christmas has invaded the shelves. I never thought I'd be one of those adults who hates the holiday but I'm just so ******* tired of it taking over EVERYTHING

Probiotics?

2d ago

26F USA. 4 y/o neutered male Persian. Vet to be contacted if problem persists into next week. My boy has been having some runny poops lately. Still acts normal, eats and drinks fine. We've had this issue in the past with him and it always seems to clear up after a good couple doses of probiotics. Typically, we use Purina Pro Plan brand from his vet, but ran out. They're pricey and while they CAN fit the budget, it's tough. It's also such a small amount, and we usually dose all 3 of our cats. Are there any other recommended brands we can try for the next few days to hopefully get our kitty feeling better? Preferable something sold in store at Petco or PetSmart so I can gr...

Is this a good cage for a large or Syrian hamster?

I'm getting my son a hamster for Christmas and I wanted to get a cage that had plenty of room... Now I'm worried that this may be too big? Any insight would be great!

activations and donations…

3d ago

c&f donations will be the death of me. even though getting activations is a pain in the *** i don’t mind it 99% of the time, because i do believe it’s beneficial to customers. it makes me (kinda) happy to help people find new ways to save a little bit of money. however i **** asking about c&f donations. not only is it another question i need to add to my already ridiculously long register script, but it just feels wrong lol. people are struggling enough as it is. the most common response i get is something along the lines of “sorry, i wish i could but…” besides, it’s for ******* christmas and halloween hasn’t even passed😹 to be fair this is my first q4 at ...

Crying in the Parking Lot

3d ago

UPDATE: Over 50 more signatures since posting this. You guys are amazing! Just crying in the PetSmart parking lot lol :( I didn't realize pet stores still sold chinchillas. My heart hurts after what I saw: a tiny glass cage, blaring florescent lights, all plastic accessories, a dust bath that sits out all day with an enormous amount of dust, no toys, food with bits of those neon plastic things. The chinchilla looked dead (it wasn't) but it was sleeping in a position I've ever seen a chin in before. The cherry on top was a group of teen girls walked by and laughed, saying "LOL omg I think it's dead!" I didn't want to be a Karen so I didn't tell...

Why do my guppies keep dying?

4d ago

Apologies in advance for how long this is, but I wanted to put EVERYTHING out there in case any small detail could be important! My dad and I bought guppies about five months ago. We're not new to fish-keeping, but we've only ever really had angelfish before now. At first, we only bought five, and they were from Petsmart. Originally they were kept in a ten gallon tank with two cories. It used to be home to our problematic angelfish before he grew out of it, and it is fully planted and fully cycled. They seemed healthy and happy, but Bloona did develop fin rot pretty early on. We put him in a hospital tank and we medicated him with API's Melafix before returning him to the tan...

Baby trainer seeking advice!

4d ago

Hello all, I have recently been hired as a pet trainer at my local petsmart and I’m very excited. I have finally finished my accreditation training and although I’ve learned a lot, I know I have a lot more to learn and get accustomed to making myself unique in my teaching style and stuff, but I was wondering any tips you might have for a first time dog trainer, something you wish your trainer taught you or told you that would’ve been helpful from the beginning, or any training tips in general. My other trainer at the store quit abruptly during my training so I am being thrown into classes right away, my first classes will be held today. The day after I graduated from my training. I am ...

Where to buy

4d ago

I’m struggling because I’ve seen recommendations for Trins but also see that she is now importing her frogs (and not from local breeders anymore) and they are very tiny on arrival. We have a petco, petsmart and a big fish store called Petland/aquarium adventure. The last one is a half aquarium store. Where have you all gotten frogs from? I guess my concern with Trins is the size and shipping and no guarantee past they arrived alive. If anyone knows local Chicago suburbs for a breeder - let me know!

New cashier advice/tips?

5d ago

Hi, guys. I'm a relatively new cashier. I've worked other cashier jobs before in small mom-and-pop stores before, so working as a PetSmart cashier feels like a bit of whiplash for me. I've worked only a handful of shifts over a few weeks, and I feel like I'm always asking leads/managers questions where the answer is very obvious, and feel as if I'm annoying them with all my questions while I'm on the register. I also have mild anxiety that makes me freeze when I'm encountered with something I'm not familiar with. Any tips on how to get better/quicker at cashiering so I don't make the leads/managers "hold my hand" through everything? Than...

canadian betta sellers

5d ago

has anyone ordered from rena's fish store before? if you have, what was your experience like? was your betta healthy upon arrival, how long have they lasted, etc? i recently lost my first betta, i had her for a year and a few months. planted, heated, filtered tank. she was from petsmart. i don't really have a local lfs to go to instead but i do want to get my next betta from a non-chain store, so if anyone has any other canadian recommendations that ship, please do share.

Work Buddy

6d ago

I made a post about a conure I saw at a PetSmart a while ago that stole my heart, but now I wanna ramble about a little guy whose heart I fear *I* have stolen. So this one is at the store I work at, and he's become the part of the day I look forward to the most. I say I fear I've stolen his heart because the more I hear about him from my other coworkers, the more I learn that they're terrified of him, and how much better he treats me by comparison. Admittedly, he has bitten the **** out of me twice now, and the first time I totally could've avoided if I didn't have a job to do (I disrupted his peace trying to clean his millet holder). Second time he was just testing...

Sleepy 🥞 and adoption update 💗

6d ago

Hello my dear friends <33 I have not gotten to respond to your comments yet because there were SO many but I read them all!!! I think Kovu would love that we are able to adopt another friend to be in a safe and lovable environment. However, we have not gotten around to it yet! The little grey kitty I posted the other day was from petsmart. We went back today to see her and she was soooo full of life and super happy along with the rest of the kitties there (5months-2years old). A worker was in the room with us, and we asked which is least likely to get adopted/which has gotten the least amount of attention. She told us that they all get a bunch of attention, and she’s never seen a k...
