The Silent Grief of Your First Canadian Holiday Season: What No One Tells New Immigrants

7h ago

I’m sitting in my downtown Vancouver apartment on a Saturday afternoon in early December, staring at my phone. My mom just sent a video of Bruno, our Golden Retriever, sleeping in my old bedroom — the room that still has my engineering textbooks on the shelf and the fairy lights I hung up five years ago. The winter sunlight (the kind that actually feels warm) is streaming through the window in the video. In Vancouver, it’s 4 PM and already dark. The kind of dark that feels like it’s swallowing me whole. I moved to Canada eight months ago for a software position at a tech company I’d dreamed of joining since my final year at Thapar. The offer letter felt like validation of every la...

Sort of blaming myself for moving back to India in my 30s

3d ago

A bit of rant and also a bit of warning if you are someone looking to shift base back to India. So I am a middle class boy, did the competitive exam grind, went to a good college, got a job. Lived and worked abroad for large part of my 20s, made a million dollars. Came back willingly to Bangalore because of an exciting job opportunity (and to build more permanent foundation). Somewhere I felt my job would allow us to live a comfortable life. I have mixed feelings about this now. When you move from a rich developed country to India as a high earning individual you gain a bigger house, a maid, on demand grocery, a driver maybe but you lose out on everything else. What used to be a simple Ube...

Hello everyone,  I have been craving for some proper Balaji Wafers and Namkeen lately and I am having difficulty finding authentic, fresh stock in Singapore. So... **where do you all buy the original Balaji Snacks in SG?** Looking for places that have: * Fresh stock * Full variety * Reliable supply * Reasonable pricing Do you guys order online? What’s On Your Radar? Top Franchise Ideas Indians Are Betting On for 2026

12d ago

Top Franchise Ideas Indians Are Betting On for 2026   FKW – Franchise Trends India 2026   2026 is shaping up to be one of those rare years where India’s franchise market doesn’t just “grow”  it mutates into something bigger, smarter, and wildly more ambitious. We’re watching tier-2 cities behave like metros, investors chase brands aggressively, and families not just entrepreneurs treat franchising as a legit wealth-building vehicle, not just a business. But with so many sectors booming at once, the biggest question remains: Which franchise will actually explode in 2026, and which ones are the noise and trends today? Let’s break down the categories that Indian investor...

Which Mixer Grinder Should You Buy? (Spent Way Too Much Time Researching This 2026)

13d ago

So I moved to my own place about 5 years ago, and the first thing I needed was a mixer grinder. How hard could it be, right? Turns out, very hard. I bought a cheap one online (looked fancy in photos). It broke down in 8 months. The motor literally started smoking while making dosa batter. Then I went too premium (₹12k), and honestly? Overkill for my needs. I was paying for features I never used. After using 3 different mixers and watching my friends and family use theirs, I finally figured out what actually matters. Not the marketing BS – the real stuff. If you're confused like I was, this might help. # WHAT I WISH SOMEONE TOLD ME FIRST Before we get into specific models, here...

Yoga side hustles are killing livable wages

15d ago

This is a long post so if you’re not going to read the whole thing, please dont comment. ****Edit: ok, so a lot of people keep asking the same questions and some people keep saying the same things so I’m just going to answer them here: 1. I’m not slagging off anyone who takes a 200hr YTT or anyone who is teaching with a 200hr . I’m slagging off studios and the culture itself because it’s literally eating itself. 2. I fully get that we are all operating inside late stage capitalism and I understand it’s hard for most everyone and not just in this industry, everyone is finding it challenging lately. 3. I’m pushing back that every other business in the US has raised pric...

We met a professional shoplifter to understand this crime’s popularity

28d ago

Steve \* first went to juvenile detention when he was 12 years old and between then and now, in the arc from puberty to middle age, he’s spent 16 years behind bars. That’s given him plenty of time to ponder the profits and pitfalls of risk versus reward. His preferred crime used to be breaking into commercial premises and shops where he’d pick open safes for the cash, or plunder cartons of cigarettes. “Don’t ever buy a safe from Bunnings,” he advises, “cause they’re f---ing terrible, they’re so unsafe it’s not funny.” The rewards for this crime were often very high. “I could get 600 to 800 packets of cigarettes and I’d get $28 a packet,” he says. But the risks ...

Comparing Miami and Chicago based on what I love, **** and feel neutral about in each city

28d ago

Follow up to yesterday's post. Thought this could be helpful if any of you are looking to move to any other cities. 1. Miami Love: The weather, palm trees, and the architecture. I find the people friendlier than Chicago by far, and I love the locals in Miami, despite the rude narrative that reddit pushes. The size of the city, it's not tiny but it's not big or overwhelming in any way. The beaches are fantastic and at times the water tends to be very warm. The animals. I love alligators, iguanas, and everything else you find in Miami. The proximity to the keys and to Orlando. **** to admit it...but Pollo Tropical. Don't come at me. How open and spacious Miami is compare...

Town by town public kitchens

29d ago

Some towns likely have this although I haven't seen it personally in this exact way - I've seen things more like soup kitchens that are ran by non-profits, that type of thing. This would be more like a town by town, county county, state by state, or even federally funded (not in this admin), public kitchen. I picture a building that would have a large kitchen, multiple cooking spots, fridges, pantries, etc. Many towns have this existing as a senior center sort of thing already. Some of it used by state or federally employed cooks that would churn out cafeteria style food that is free for anyone, donation optional. Would not need to be fancy, the idea is to feed people who need/...

On How We Cope (Or Not) With An Overwhelming World

Your ₹10 Chocolate Bar Just Got Smaller: The Silent Tax Nobody Talks About

30d ago

Sometimes, as I sit with my chai, observing the everyday rush at the local market, I notice something quite subtle yet significant. Your favourite ₹10 chocolate bar, which used to feel a bit substantial, now seems to fit in your palm with room to spare. It makes you wonder: are groceries actually getting more expensive, or are they just... shrinking? As someone who looks closely at economic trends and their human impact, especially here in India, I have been thinking a lot about 'shrinkflation' (the practice of reducing product size or quantity while its price stays the same). This is a hidden form of price increase, quite unlike 'inflation' (a general increase in pric...

From Mumbai to Munich: 10 Culture Shocks Every Indian Faces in Germany 😅

34d ago

When Mt friend first moved from **Mumbai to Munich**, he thought his biggest struggle would be the language. Turns out, **the real challenge was the silence, recycling, and Sunday rules** Here are **10 culture shocks** that hit almost every Indian student after landing in Germany # 1. Punctuality Is a Religion If your class starts at 9:00, **it actually means 9:00** not 9:05 Indian Standard Time. Even buses arrive *on the dot.* You’ll find yourself running through the cold, whispering “Bas 2 minute!” to the universe. # 2. Silence Everywhere From trains to classrooms, Germans treat silence like gold. You will instinctively lower your voice, even while talking to your mom on ...
